See them for sale frequently as a freshwater species even though they are not and are actually a brackish water fish. Is it possible to take them to saltwater though, given their tolerances of water salinity?

The short answer is yes, but I've never done it personally. I believe justinpsmith has though, so I would recommend getting more details from him.

The long answer is yes as well, it is actually easier and healthier for these puffers to be in full salt water, in fact in the wild they are only found in brackish water as juvs, once they mature they go to the grass flats and are found in full sea water.

I have one in Full saltwater now actually. I have had him about 5 years. He started in brackish at about 1.008 when I got him from my LFS. He stayed there about a year and then moved up to 1.018 in my higher end brackish set up. When I decided to take down my brackish tanks, he moved to full marine and has done great. These are the toughest Puffers you will find IMO.
My only advice would be to try to find a decent sized one if you can. They do not move to marine waters until adult size usually (if at all) and I am not sure of what the effects are if they go to full marine at a young age...although I think it may be fine.
Most of them never actually leave brackish waters.

I will take some. They get kind of dull colored as they age.
