Anyone ever had success with a gold rim tang (Acanthurus nigricans)? I have read they usually dont do well in captivity. I have only read of one person keeping on successfully.

I had one years ago (( sold it when I moved, since it was getting too big for my 75 )).

While I had it ( had it for about 2 years ), it was a great fish. If memory serves it was eating within a day or two of getting it. Pretty much ate whatever I put in the tank. For the most part it wasn't too aggressive, but near the end it was getting a little bit more so, due to my tank being too small for it.

I have heard that thers are one of the more difficult tangs to keep. I have heard that they are very disease prone also

How tough are they relative to a Powder Blue or Acanthurus japonicus (Powder Brown) ?

same as achilles, powder blue/brown. Get a good one that eats and feed heavy to keep it fat

I've heard/read that A. nigricans almost never lives for long in captivity.. really horrible survival rates. However A. Japonicus (which IMHO looks extremely similar) is much better. Still a tang, so can't say 'super hardy' but much better than a. nigricans.

Go for the Japonicus! But good luck either way

Agreed, though many feel the powder brown (acanthurus japonicus) is a bit easier than the other three in the group (whitecheek/goldrim, achilles, and powder blue). It all depends on the health of the specimen that you're able to get your hands on.
