I just picked up a pair of LumenMax reflectors for my tank http://www.sunlightsupply.com/aqua/products.aspx?request=AQUA_LM_MOGUL&title=Reflectors&type=product I will be adding a third pretty soon (for some reason I thought I could get away with only two). Anyway my old reflectors had the bulb mounted vertically and the LumenMax are horizontal mount. I'm wondering if I should place them so the bulbs are perpendicular or parallel to the tank?

Thanks for any help.

tagging along. I mounted my 250 DE parallel to the front of the tank. I always wondered if the the middle of the tank was getting enough light. I had one bulb out the other day and it didn't seem like nearly enough light was making it to the center. I was wondering if I should switch the reflectors in my canopy. I don't have lumenmax mine are like the reef optix III, but still the same question.

I've always mounted mine perpendicular, but I don't think it matters too much. What are the dimensions of the tank and how many reflectors are you using?

Currently useing two lumenmax elite's on either end and I still have one of my old 'lampshade style' pendents in the middle. I'll be saving up and buying another lumenmax for the middle. Tank is 60" long 24" wide and 30" deep.

I have an almost identical 170g (60x24x27). I found a pair of 400s to be enough for full coverage, are you finding it not enough? Just curious.

I'm running three 250's, without the one in the middle it's too dim there. I used to blame it on the old reflectors, that's why I thought two good quality reflectors would be fine.

Kenzy...got any pics?

Here's an older pic

Unfortunately when we built a new house I had to take the tank down and its sitting empty in the basement right now. But the itch is starting up again so I might set up a smaller 65g tank for now just to get things going again.

That's a nice looking tank. I hope you get it set up again one day. So does anyone else have an opinion or info about bulb orientation?

I have my reflectors/bulbs running parallel with the front glass. I am going to switch them when I redo my canopy. My point is for my tank the one reflector is covering a 24" X 19" (The 24" is from middle of tank to side and the 19" is from front to back) area so I would rather have the ends of the bulb at the front and back of my tank since I need more coverage from left to right. JMO I could be way off...:D

My reflectors are like these:
