I currently have a Mag 12 on the system that I'm starting back up. The thing is that I have a 30 gal. glass sump and want to get a return pump that doesnt have such a noticeable hum. Any suggestions?

Eheim makes very reliable silent pumps as well.

Any size recommendations as I'm replacing a Mag 12?

The biggest one that they have will only put out about 900 gallons max so you would lose some flow using an Ehiem, however the noise reduction makes it so worth it and they don't run near as warm either. You could always add supplemental flow if need be.

Here is a link for the Eheim pumps so you can see the flow capabilities of each size .

Thanks Wartskin and Aqua and others...I think I have a pump to order on Friday. The fact that they put out less heat is a plus. BTW, any recommendations on a needle-wheel pump for my old Euro Reef skimmer? I told my wife I would make the tank quieter this time around, so I'd like to get rid of some heat and noise in this area too. I currently have a Sedra 5000 that needs a new impeller (the magnet seems to have swollen somehow and wont turn even though it doesn't touch the side of the housing). Any suggestions are welcome. TIA.

maybe instead of replacing the pump you should just add more noise to the room.

Could try adding a couple children, dogs, and so forth. :lol

Another bump for eheim... The Ocean Runner pumps are very quiet also, cheaper and slightly less energy... But I like my eheims!

I was using a Quiet One 1200 and I could definitely hear it hum. Also, when it came with a faulty broken impeller, pentair (their manufacturer) refused to send a replacement impeller.

I've never heard a single bad thing about the Eheims (except for the price).

I've loved my eheim, I'd recommmend it. The 1262 should still be plenty on a 110 gallon setup.

Ocean Runner 3500 or Eheim 1262 in that order.

Yep...just cleaned it thoroughly a few days ago. But even when it was brand new it was too loud to me. After a little research, the Eheim pump is what I'm going with. Thanks for the input guys.

I like the Poseidon pumps, they are ultra silent however they do run on the hotter side.

My favs are the Sequence ReeFlo pumps. High volume pumps that are very quite for the flow they produce. Another added bonus to these pumps is the very low wattage use, and some of the older models like the Wahoo could pump up 37 feet with an average wattage use of 255 or something like that and still had a high flow rate.

Don't need that much flow, the Eheim's can be used externally as well. Had one on my Nano tank that I loved.

Ocean Runner - I have tripped over a couple of post where they failed. everyone keeps saying they are more efficient but that is just reading the specs - real application measuring watts and gpm would need to be measured.

ehiem 1262 is running my 2 tank, 1 carbon canister t off , one fuge t off - for a total water system of around 130 (but not one 90 degree bend) - up to 5 feet on the main tank - usually run externally, but recently I moved it internally. can't hear it hum at all unless I put my ear to it. While it is only very slightly warm to the touch - when I ran it externally - I suspect it adds more heat than I originally thought since it is water cooled - the watts have to go somewhere. I put a killawatt on mine last week and while it is suppose to draw around 80 watts it was only drawing 52 and this went down when I throttled it down as an experiment - which makes sense but I was surprised. of course I need some real water movers in the tanks and am only using the 1262 ehiem to circulate about 3 times per hour for optimal skimming.

I love ehiems - period. Its all I have ever had.

OR pumps are true to their nameplates using a Kill A Watt meter and 1" positive displacement water flow meter.

You have tested with flow meter? - may I ask if you can recommend a flow meter?

I use a Rockwell water meter like used by your water utility. I have both a 5/8" for testing small pumps and a 1" for testing larger pumps. Those copupled with a ball valve and 10 psi pressure gauge and the Kill A Watt meter make accurate tests possible. For open discharge measurements without head restrictions I actually use rubbermaid totes with gallon markings and float it all in my swimming pool to keep the elevations close to the same. I time the flow into an open container.

I run a MAG12 and have it supported on little Silicone "feet" that I made and its quiet. I can hear the hum of my Tunze 6025 over the return pump (if that helps).

I do wish that it ran cooler, though.
