I'm terrible at electricity. Will this unit power a couple of 8 watt powerheads and for approximately how long?

Unless I misread it, it only has 2 12v outlets. So you will need an inverter as well.

It would be cheaper to get a garden tractor battery and an inverter instead.

I recently purchased a CyberPower battery back-up unit. 850 VA / 510 Watts. Up to 120 minutes run time. $79. Small black box (approx 6" X 5" X 4"), LED display panel. Has 5 outlets to plug into. Not a replacement for a generator but will keep the powerheads working during relatively short power outages.

If its for in your truck heres a link http://www.target.com/Wagan-210-Watt-Smart-AC-Inverter/dp/B000BQMKM4/sr=1-4/qid=1228368555/ref=sr_1_4/181-8120241-9303752?ie=UTF8&rh=k%3Aauto%20ac%20inverter&page=1

If its for a backup on your tank use a a computer battery back up as previously mentioned

just trying to kill 2 birds with one stone. I'll need one of these for my boat, but if it'll help mehandle my tank in an emergency I may buy it sooner. I thought I would need an inverter, because its DC right?

Your boat battery with a inverter woud do the trick! A deep cycle battery allows to be drained further than a standard battery with out being harmed. This setup will run a wood stove fan for a half a day, so a aquarium pump is no problem. Just make sure any inverter you buy will handle the amps you need to run. (The bigger the better)
