I'm going to start working on a DIY canopy in the near future and I would like to use my Nova Extreme system. I figure the best way to do this is to take the shell off, and mount the ballast, fans and bulbs to the canopy itself.

Has anyone taken one of these apart? Should I watch out for anything? And last but not least, would it be a good idea to upgrade the ballast?

I'll have another question on which bulbs would be best, but that's for another time.

Thanks

If you are upgrading the ballast, why not just sell it, and buy some ends, and a fan with the profit.
The ends aren't waterproof so you should get different ones. You would get more power out of an icecap ballast, and the fan is pretty crappy at best.
If I were you I would buy an icecap 660, 8 waterproof end caps, and a good quality fan.
FWIW I run a nova 4x54 over my 90.
