I just recently started up a new 40 breeder SPS tank, and am curious what kind of fish load would be good for the system to provide sufficient nutrients for the corals. It has just under 100x turnover from a Vortech, two Koralia 3's and a Mag 9.5 return, a 5-gallon bucket for a RDSB in the sump, and an AquaC EV-180 with a Mag 9.5 for skimming. I also have some chaeto in the sump. So far, the only inhabitant is a six-line wrasse, and I will be adding a pair of onyx clowns soon.

It depends on which skimmer you have.
I've seen healthy SPS 40g tank with 10 fishes with a huge skimmer.

It also depends on the fish. Some can get by without a great deal of food or can forage. Clowns will eat all that you give them but don't really need a whole lot, so don't give in to temptation and overfeed them. I have 7 fish in my 50G+20G tank (2 ocellaris clowns, a banggai cardinal and 4 green chromis). Very small fish like gobies add almost nothing to the bioload.

Sorry for the hijack, but I have the same question, I have a 24 gallon aquapod, getting a sapphire skimmer whcich is said to be rated for a 55 gallon tank. Current fish are a yeallow coris wrasse and yasha goby.

how many fish you can keep is very dependant on how well you can maintain your bioload & of course fish territorial space.

for example, in my 55B SPS tank(36x18x20) i keep: TANG POLICE ALERT
Pair of true percs <2"
Firefish
2 Blue Chrosm <2"
Blue Tang 2"
Yellow Tang 3"
Barlett Anthais 3"
Yellow Wrasse 3"
Candy Hogfish 2"
Spotted Mandarin
Flame Hawkfish 3"
RBTA 8"+

My bioload is very high, i feed minimum of 2x a day. I also vodka dose and utilize a good skimmer. Nitrates are constantly at 0. Fish all get along. I would say I'm maxed out on fish, but a upgrade is coming soon soo I just may get more fish=X.

In my 65g, which is similar to your 40 breeder, if have:

Pair of Rod's Onyx clowns
3" banghai cardinal
2" Foxface
yellow wrasse
mccosker's flasher wrasse

and Im still looking for another fish, just havent decided what it will be. hawkfish, blenny, anthias, just not sure yet.

IMO, small tanks look better with more smaller fish as opposed to a few bigger ones.

I have 11 fish in my 40 breeder. It's SPS dominant, and a little over a year and a half old. I usually feed once a day, but sometimes twice. Apparently my CSS125 is junk, but it seems to work pretty well for me. Here's a link to my thread.

I'm not very active here on RC, but have a much more pic / detail intensive thread on aNotheR(.com) site under the same screen name.

The FTS in pic in my thread does the tank no justice. Not only do I suck at taking pics, but that was right after I moved the tank to my new house, so alot of my corals weren't looking too hot.
