Just getting into SPS and want some opinions on the various foods for these guys. Also, will Arcti-Pods provide any value for SPS?

Do SPS really eat cyclops? I am assuming your talking about the frozen cubes?

fish poo!.. and they get a bunch of goods from my DIY food.. cyclopyese, zoo plankton , rotifers and some other goodies.. main thing when keeping SPS is calc, alk , mag and keeping all other water parameters stable.. HTH

I feed mine rotifiers. Seems to be working good.

I use rotifers as well as several local club members and we all like what it's done. I use the Reef Nutrition Roti-feast.

thanks for the help! Sounds like we can 'one-stop shop' with Reef Nutrition's line of products... using the Arcti-Pods right now and the fish love it. Will try the Roti-feast. What reaction do you see when using it; better PE, colors, growth?

primarily roti-feast but once a week an underdose of coral frenzy to mix it up (and fish poo too).

Arcti-Pods themselves are far to big for SPS but if there has been any leakage of the oils contained in the body they'll offer a minor food source for SPS. They truly are meant for LPS, fish, and other filter feeders that can capture larger particles. Oyster-Feast and Roti-Feast are the two Reef Nutrition sells as SPS feeds :)

Now, WHEN do you guys like to feed your SPS? Most people say after the lights go out but I don't see any polyps out when my lights are off. I am assuming they use their polyps for prey capture?

weird, my digi seems to have the greatest PE at night...

Cyclopes, rotifers, baby-brine and mostly fish poo

Man this will be quite a list:

rotifer, phytoplankton, zooplankton, aminos, coral snow, baby brine, fish poo, coral food frozen cubes, cyclops (although the jury is out on that), and i think that is it. I feed mostly as night but try to throw some in during the day. Cant seem to get that great daytime Pe but at night it is fabulous.

I feed fish poo and cyclopeeze. Is coral frenzy any good?

Fish poo & Rotifers. If your looking for fish food, Rotifers serve multiple food purposes and their micron size is perfect for sps.

I feed my sps and fish a mixed food of mysis, baby brine, plankton, flake and cyclopeez. This is not really ment for the corals but I feel they get some of what the fish miss. Fish poop is always good, I rely on this more than anything to feed the corals. Having some nutrients in the water (po4 and no3) help with coral color as well.

SPS don't necessarily need spot feed and will get their "meaty" foods from the water column. You can toss in some cyclop-eeze, zooplankton, or something else noted for SPS once a week if you choose, but if any of that is in the food you feed your fish, the SPS will grab it too. As others have said, they also get nutrients from fish detritus.

Took me a moment of wondering whether you were serious or not but I figured I'd answer just in case you were...

That's not an item that's sold. It's just fish poop from the fish in the tank. :D

I remember one time, a fox face i had ripped out the biggest stream of diarrhea I had ever seen. It seriously clouded the tank. My skimmer went nuts, and my filter socks quickly filled up.

must of had the beer squirts from a long night of boozing on the vodka dosing! can't believe there was enough matter to cloud the tank, that's crazy...

I personally like DTs Oyster Eggs. You have to keep them frozen but I get very good polyp extension when I feed them to my sps.

+1 DT Oyster eggs every other day

Lots of DIY food and OTC fish food for the fish which in return feeds the SPS with their poop.

Tyrenlds - I was thinking the same thing when everyone was saying "they feed fish poo." What kind of sick reefers are collecting their fishes' poo (and pehaps the poo of their friends' fishes). Rotifers and fireplace ash for me.

Here is an interesting article for those that think all corals don't need to eat...

Are you serious? Fireplace ASH?

I like to read this about once a year. Bacteria makes up most of a corals diet.

I've had great results with DT's oyster eggs in the past. My SPS have never been so colorful and the polyp extension was surreal. The only downside in my opinion is the steep price. At about ~$25 for a tiny container, it CAN get expensive. I have since found a better alternative which is Oyster-Feast and Roti-Feast. I am getting the same results as I was with DT's. Again, just my experience with these foods.

My corals like to feed on light and clean water.

I just skip past the fish and poop directly in the tank. My skimmer and my GF go nuts but its worth it.

Saves on the water bill too.

(i keed i keed)

In actuality: frozen mysis, DT's oyster eggs, cylop-eez, and selcon, mashed into a gooey paste and squirted over the colonies daily.

Fish poo here. And whatever they get out of the food I make. I havent done anything special for over a year with great results. I just try and keep good calcium levels along with my Alk.
