my 250 bulbs are closer to 16 inches from the water and stuff grows fine most everywhere and i also have several clams on the sand that are quite happy.

10 inches from the surface should be fine. I think my bulbs ae right around 11" from the surface of my water.

Assuming that you don't have to worry about the bulbs being splashed, I would think what ever height works best for you -- taking into account the reflector you are using, and how much hot your tank gets.
For my 58, the lights (( a full fixture )) sits right on top of the tank.
75, hanging full fixture is about 5 inches off the water.
29, Current Sunpod -- using the legs, about 4 inches off the water.

6-10"
You should be fine at that height, but just watch the coral response. If they seem to be lacking light, lower the fixture.

Dead center of my single ended 175 20K's are 8.5" above the water.
Just worked out that way.... Everything in my tank does well.

it all depends on your reflectors and wattage of the bulbs

I keep reef optix III 250w halides 3" above the water surface only because that's what my canopy allows. It has no negative effects though.
