One of the biggest problems with Sicces is that they sputter at startup... the reason, as I have found, has to do with the meshwheel as the volute isnt very thick. When the motor starts, the impeller and its mesh gets sucked up against the volute face, causing friction... and then sputter... The easiest way around this has always been to twist the volute out a little... giving the impeller about an extra 1/8-1/4" of volute depth. If you could find a slightly longer ceramic shaft (or create a custom shaft support that held the shaft w/ a little more length), you would likely solve many of the startup problems with the Sicce pumps by making the volute about 1/4" thicker than stock.. Combine this with a 1" outlet, and you have yourself a winner.

So it sounds like you come up with a solution to the start-up problems? Great news if thats the case! Another break through for ATB.
Watch out though!!!! You know swc is going to get their hands on that pump and send it to China to be copied.....

It's Depend ..... to mach layer the pump will not start even with long shaft... the max i was pull with this pump was 35LPM but with difficulty . the pump will run and then can stop....

My sicce with ghetto volute and pinwheel starts every time, I have no doubt this airstar2 will outperform it in every way.
Mesh is the reason everyone thinks they have issues, mesh has issues...

Kona
It is for a new line of conical skimmers
Currently right now it is a pinwheel but we are testing if you can make a meshwheel that is reliable

What was the wattage of the pump in it's current configuration?

Putting the pump on a stand is typical of most askoll based pumps... so doing it on a Sicce isnt exactly new. In this case though, its not just a stand, but also a functional part of the impeller well.

Yes, I do work for a company that sells Sicce based skimmers. But I have always said that the Sicce pumps are not my skimmer pump of choice. I find the Sicce a great for pump for budget skimmers but there are better pump options available today that don't require the use of mesh to pull high air numbers. No, I don't find them junk because they do work well with the pin wheel on small to med size skimmers and are affordable for the average hobbiest. I was just handing it to ATB for the great job of taking the Sicce pump to a different level. Props are always given when due.:D

Victor, Correct me if I am wrong. The Economy ATB is not a better skimmer than the ATB small but will be close to the same in performance. The only difference being is the use of a custom Sicce pump and the the body will not be able to be disassembled.

Less than what? Less than the price on the website, or is the ATB volute an extra $50 on top of that? Just curious what this meant.

I don't think folks would disagree that an airstar is better than 2 sicces, performance-wise. However, the point is that this is an "economy" line, and the unit with the airstar IS more expensive than 2 sicces (look at the Octo Extreme cones for a perfect example). So there is a point - for people who don't mind a couple extra watts and a little more space, they can save money and get about the same performance, so I don't think its a waste of time.

Funny you guys mention that 'econo' not being the best name... although as of late, 'econo' has become a very trendy thing. But for those not feeling the crunch, or aren't into the whole hybrid car thing... I see what you mean.
I like that model numbering though... like how BMW has its car numbers named after the series, then engine liters. That might not be a bad idea here.
When I think of things I like in Austria, I think of art, Augarten porcelain and loads of other hand crafts that have vanished from the rest of the EU, schnitzel, and Viennese waltzes... heck, and classical music (Mozart from Salzburg). Oh, and skiing (St. Anton anyone?). Oh, and maybe starting WW1... since the Habs were from there (which led to WW2 and every other major conflict since in the 20th century including now). Oh, and my college physics professor... I would recognize his tyrolean accent anywhere... just like the Californicator!!!

Kevin,
Yes it would work the sicce on the medium body but it would not work as well as having two sicces. We actually match the body to the pump/pumps. We have ran tests and concluded you would be better with a small than a medium with one sicce.

Yes it would work the sicce on the medium body but it would not work as well as having two sicces. We actually match the body to the pump/pumps. We have ran tests and concluded you would be better with a small than a medium with one sicce.
Thanks Victor,
I'm setting up a 150 gallon with 30 gallon frag tank. I'm going for a low nutrient sps system but I don't stock heavily and I don't feed as much as most, so I think the small should be fine. A couple more questions:
Are the sicce pumps pretty silent? What is the replacement pump cost should they fail down the road?
Thanks! Kevin

What? Tests? It's just a cone. Just throw some pumps on it and call it a day. "One size fits all."

The replacement cost of the sicce pump is 129.00 with the custom volute it is dead quiet but the stock volute its another story, Somedays its noisy and some days its quiet.

Victor I per ordered the Econo 840 from So-Cal last week and noticed the foot print size listed is the same as the 1050. What is the correct foot print size for the 840 or is it the same as the small cone with Ehem 1260?
Thanks,

Victor, is there any plan to pre tap a drain hole in the collection cups? I can see these filling up quite quickly. I understand that they should be cleaned regularly, and adding a valve will add cost to the skimmer, but having it pre drilled and plugged may be a nice option.

the main difference is the pump and these skimmers do not disassemble like the other models
Hi Victor, Happy New Years to you and yours!
other than the lid, is the collection cup removable or is the entire skimmer just one piece?

So the Econo 840 has a larger footprint than the small with the Eheim? The small cone is listed as 14 x 8, but the econo is listed as 14 x 10.5. I'm confused, they look like they should be about the same.

The 1050 comes with an airstar 1300 air intake 1300L/min

Thanks,
Also, any idea of what the water throughput is of the airstar 1300 on an M ~ 1050 size?
Just ball park?
