Hi everyone,

I just got a really nice frag from an LFS nearby of an ORA Hawkins blue enchinata. Right now I just finished acclimating it and placed it on the sand bed. How long should I keep it there the tank it came from had 400w halides at the LFS and I only have a 150w halide.

Also what type of placement should I shoot for when it is time to place it? High flow? high light?

Any tips for me and/ or pictures of it all grown out would be great. Thanks RC!

I have a frag as well. I placed it under a 400w 12k about 30" beneath the light. The light is 20" above the water. I am moving it down 6". I will do it 1" a week until it is where I want it. Seems to be doing good there though.

You should be able to already put it up on the rockwork because of the substantially lower light. I don't have one, but am definately planning on getting one once I have the chance.

143gadgets..... I love you tank, and have followed your thread for a long time. absolutely beautiful tank. In fact your piece is the reason I got this coral. My next peice (once I find one) is that green with blue polyp and purple rim cap.

IFbettas Thank you, I think that i will move the coral to its perminant home tommorow. Although I would like to find a place to mount the big ORA frag plug.

This is also one of my favorites, and Chris has one of the best I've ever seen!! Mine is still just a little guy, but I'm getting good growth mid way down the tank with medium flow under 384 watts of PC lighting (really need to upgrade my lights :sigh: )

Chris, is that a Purple Haze Monti next to yours??

I just looked at mine and realized that it has grown quite a bit since my photos. I need to take another shot of it today. But in my two pics you can see the encrusting on the plug. The first shot is newer than the second. After seeing you guys I am stoked to see mine as a full colony!

143Gadgets, can you tell us how you've placed your Hawkins in relation to light source (also color temp etc)?

Chris yours looks a lot like the Ice/fire. If I didn't know better I would have said that from the begining!

Thanks everyone for the compliments! Icefire... I wish!
Mykel - Yup. Thats the purple haze. It just glows.
It's under a decent amount of flow and light.

Hawkins is the fastest growing coral in my tank. I bought it as a nice sized ORA frag almost three months ago, and it's never stopped under my T5's. It's 16" under mainly Blue+ and UVL actinics. Has textbook aqua-blue color that is extremely uniform all over—I mean this Acro is one solid rich color with nice darker cobalt blue tips. Jeez, I wish I could afford a nice dig cam for pics for sharing, really bums me out...

What's insane is that I have accidently fragged this frag twice now...! Under my T5's it's growing with very tight formation branches.

One of the fastest growing Acros I have ever seen, let alone owned. If you can get a hold of one of these, go for it...!

It's under a decent amount of flow and light.

I hope my Purple Haze recovers... all my Montis went pale due to dosing Mag for Bryopsis control and my Haze is now white and very light lavender... still has some PE so it might recover some day, but I want that deep purple back!! I've really got to figure out how to make my Montis happy again

I'll try and get a photo of my little Hawkins tonight... it's still pretty but it will look sad next to all these large beauties :D

Todd, I'd agree with the Hawkins being one of the fastest growers in my tank... I can see daily growth on the encrustation on my little frag... I can't wait to see it in a year!!

Sorry to bump a slighty older thread, but I just got my Hawkins for Christmas and it's already a good mini-colony on the frag plug, so I'd like to get it mounted and to better flow asap. My concern is that right now, I have better flow up-top than on the mid and lower levels of the tank. I have a 250w MH that is ~6" above the surface of the water on a 20" deep tank. Would you put the coral at mid-level in about medium flow, or closer to the light in high flow?

The hawkins echinata is an amazing piece of sps. I was lucky enough to obtain a great frag from a fellow reefer. I have it about 15 inches from a 400w pendant, but after reading this thread I think I will move it down a bit so I can move other light intense sps up!
