Do you need to run any actinics with radium 20k's??

I use 20K XMs, so take this for what it is worth.

I still use mine, really don't notice much of a difference (( granted they are 2*96 PC, and I am using 2*250 MH )) when the halides are on, but I like them for the dusk/dawn effect, and for being able to see the tank longer then the halides are on.

Radiums look good without actinics

I'm running ny 400 w Radium supplemented by 4 t-5's in the fashion of:
Giesemann Aquaflora (bring out the blue and red colors of fish and coral), KZ Fiji purple, ATI Aquablue 12k, and ATI blue +...

no actinics.

Better viewing IMO dusk/dawn cycles as well than neon blue actinics - 1/2 of the reason why i chose this setup...

I run a VHO super actinic R but only for dusk/dawn (one hour before/after the Radium). I can't even tell the VHO is on if the Radium is running, that bulb looks great without any supplemental lighting IMO.

As for how long do they stay on before/after the main lights is really up to you, and your viewing habits.

As for me, my actinics come on at 10:30 AM, and shut off at 11:30 PM -- where as my day lights come on at 3 PM and shut off at 10:30. This fits into my schedule that allows me to view the tank when I am home.

I use x2 20k radiums with a Gallaxy ballast. No actinic supplementation.

Tank shot. This is a little more "blue" than it is in person.

Here is an outside shot (my avatar), that represents what color is being omitted.

As said I use VHO for dusk to dawn, but when the radiums fire you can't tell they are on.

Love the outside shot!

My neighbors comment on my library lighting with its eerie glow.

Thanks for the input, I guess it's time to rid of my poor mans timer and get a real timer for a change.
