A few questions...

1)The footprint of my protein skimmer comparment is small (roughly 6 x 7 inches). Question: Is the sump extension set really necessary? What is the benefit of add this?

2)How high should the water level be in my sump to properly run this skimmer?

The answer to 2 will answer number 1. Without the sump set you must have a constant 9.5-11" of water. With the sump set the water level can vary from 4-11"
