this is from a chemical supplier an is much cheaper

I would not use a chemical supply company iron oxide without it being intended for water purification. The surface area and particle size may be totally inappropriate.

The many types of GFO sold to hobbyists are similar, but not necessarily identical. Differences can include the available surface area (which impacts capacity) and any treatments that may have been done to chemically wash the surfaces of the GFO.
