View Full Version : Is this bulkhead too small for my hole

I have a 1" bulkhead, about the most common size. the shaft is 1-5/8" the hole is 2" which leaves 3/8" of wiggle room. If centered all is well. if it is up against the edge of the glass i think it would leak. Ideally i should get a bigger bulkhead but i think it will work.

Sounds similar to mine.

This seals. Just make sure it's tight and if your in doubt, put a bead of silicone around it. I did that, on the inside of the tank and no leaks :)

Why is the hole so large for a 1" bulkhead? It should be around 1 3/4". I'd be nervous with that little wiggle room.

If its predrilled I would buy the larger bulkhead online and step the plumbing down rather than use the smaller bulkhead. Thats scary.

Thats a lot of slop. I would not chance it, a little bump and you drain your system down to that point. Ideally you want the entire ruber gasket to seal on a flat surface. I'd wait and get the correct bulkhead, don't get in a hurry.

You probably need a 1" schedule 80 bulkhead. They are the thick grey ones. The walls of the bulkhead are thicker so it should fill out that hole. I would be very leery of that much gap space. While I'm sure you could get it sealed, think of how much of a pain it would be to have to replace it later on.

Sounds standard to me. Thats only 3/16 of an inch per side. My 130 oceanic has 1 3/4 holes for a 3/4 bulkhead which measures 1 3/8. Which leave 3/8 of an inch. So the next step up would be, 2" hole, 1 inch bulkhead. A 1 1/2 is too big.

If you use the kits that come with oceanic that have the barb already attached to the bulkhead, then the return has a 3/4" barb on it but it is actually a 1" sized bulkhead.
Here is a link for bulkhead hole sizes. It has the schedule 80 as well as the lightweight ones which we are used to seeing. This would also be a good place to order from as well. As you'll see, the schedule 80 1" is a much closer fit to your hole.
