I was thinking of starting from scratch with a marine fish tank and wanted to get some suggestions. I plan on doing a 55-65 gallon tank fish only, eventually maybe a few hardy corals and an anemone or two, was wondering what would people suggest for filtration, and whether to go with sand or crushed coral

crushed coral collects a lot of detritus. SOme live rock and a good sized protein skimmer is a good option to use if you think you may want to add some reef action later on. Most people catch the bug sooner or later. For fish only you can use a canister filter but IMO they are more work than they are worth even for a FO tank.

Anemones are generally tougher to keep than corals, but you have plenty of time to read up. HTH

I would recommend that you avoid Crushed Coral like the plague.

for filtration I'd highly recommend a quality skimmer and a sump, and like pointed out definitely avoid crushed coral, either go sand or bare bottom.

Go bare bottom
