as the title says i came home today from work today and looked at my tank and my heart dropped! all my SPS are bleached and my zoos and palys are all closed up. the only thing i did different was add chemi-pure elite to my tank. is this the possible cause? i never ran anything in my tank before but i was having a little Algae growth so figure the chemi-pure would help. what do i do? what can i do man this sux, idk if i can bounce back from this one i have alot of money in SPS in my tank!

Some background information would be useful

Params
age of tank
stocking list
equipment
pics of corals

Indeed, we'd need to know a lot more about the tank. Any other changes lately, particularly regarding temperature or other water parameters.

sorry to hear ... how did you add it?

I've used chemi pure elite in a lot of tanks with no problems. I would look elsewhere for answers.

Came home from where? How long were you gone? What was the temperature of your home and the tank?

it's a 24 gal aquapod

the tank will be a year old i jan. i cycled the tank for a long time, i didn't add anything to the tank intil august

it has a 150 watt sunpod

hob refugium

votech mp20

tunze 9002 skimmer

mj 1200 return with a hydor flo return nozzle

jbj auto top off

unsre of the param just atomatically assume it was the chemi pure

the adding the chemi pure is the only thing i changed in 3 months ive been just using the tunze filter floss and water changes. i also changed the filter floss when i added the chemipure. when i did a water change everything look worse. the lps was looking ok then all receded. now wth the lights off the lps looks ok but the sps are worst. when i did a water change i notice the plug for the led on the sunpod was unplugged and was in the tank.

i run my tank pretty cold at 76 and peaks at 78

my salt level is omg i just checked 1.020 man my ato must have been running too much maybe

besides your salinity being so low, this is what has happened to me from adding carbon in my tank as a FYI

since the carbon clears up the water, the light intensity increases and thus it bleached my coral. therefore i slowly introduced it alot slower. good luck

1.020 will cause sps to stress big time.

what should it be?

1.024-1.026 is what most people keep their reef tanks at
1.018-1.020 is for fish only systems. The reason why you run it that low is to keep parasites and other bad guys off the fish.

if you just found it to be 1.020 the water level would be VERY obviously high on a 24g with HOB fuge at the time you did the testing assuming it was close to 1.026 to begin with.

low salinity requires less metabolic work for saltwater fish (they breath easier in lower salinity). 1.018 might kill some parasites but it wont do a thing to ich (has to be brought down to 1.009).
