Will a brittle sea star eat my live snails in the sand?

No, they shouldn't. though I have heard stories about the green death star. but a normal (not green brittle star) won't.

I just read that they are really good for left over detitus. but is one better than the other. I just don't want him to wipe out my snails in the sand.

I have never seen a brittle star eat a live animal. They eat detrius but prefer left over food (which prevents detrius :) I have a 12" brittle in my 20 gallon and he is a model citizen. It should be perfectly fine, but don't get a brittle star labeled a "green brittle" because they will eat anything and everything once they get big enough.

Green brittles, as stated before, are piscivores. They hunt and eat fish. Others do not.
