I used to use a plenum years ago when Jaubert systems were cutting edge. They still work, but you will get the same results with a DSB with much less effort. All you need is a 5-6" sand bed or a bucket with 8" sand plumbed into your sump. A few nassarious snail to stir it up and you are done.

Still hotly debated. No bashing intended. . In my opinion, a plenum with a deep sand bed over it will work as well as a deep sand bed without a plenum under it. The plenum takes extra space

They use a plenum in one of the lfs here with success, although I agree that a DSB by itself is prob the way to go.

Plenum take up too much room other than that they work. I suggest it be placed in the sump .

Actually, even a deep sand bed without a plenum may not be the best for everyone. An aquarium can be run with or without one wether bare bottom or shallow sand bed. Depends on the critters you wan't to keeep. the live rock ,skimmer and other biofiltration methods.
