Sure, it could and has been done.

They really look nice hung however.

At minimum, you could cut a 2x4 to make braces going from front to back and place it on these, but the fixtures are so nice you would probably want to come up with something a bit nicer.

We have 2 of the 4X80W units and both sit directly on the top of the tank. Looks really sleek. Getting into the tank involves lifting one of the units Off but not really a hassle and stops "jumpers"
These things rock but I'm not sure if you can get the 80W'ers in the US we had to buy ours in the England and have them shipped out to us in New Zealand.
Fits the top of our 5ft tank perfectly:smokin:
