Is it necessary to purchase TDS calibration fluid or is there a DIY solution that I am not aware of? My two year old got a hold of my hand held meter and threw it across the room, so, I am afraid that meter needs recalibration or at least a check up. Thanks.

A salinity standard can easily be made with NaCl. Randy wrote a handy article on that. :)

Over here, a local compounding pharmacy charges $2 to mix up a solution, but we've also tried using a 2 liter bottle & kitchen measuring devices, and Randy's recipe seems to work just fine.

~3.65% NaCl has the same refractive index as 35 ppt seawater
~3.71% NaCl has the same Specific Gravity as 35 ppt seawater.
