does the plastic rimming actually give support, mine pops right off and im wondering if i could just take it off, its a 30 gallon long
will the tank still be able to hold water in it without the plastic rim?

I'm not 100% sure but I think they put that on because on the stock tanks they don't bevel and polish the edges of the glass and the plastic hides the seams.

unless it has a center brace you should be ok, but, as EnglishRebel stated its to hide the excess silicone in the corners and keep you from getting cut on sharp/unsanded edges.
to attach it back to it, silicone the inside of the rim and press it back in place...

if u want it to stick shoot some silicone on it and place it back on the tank.
