I'm looking at used tanks on Craigslist and occasionally find one that's what I'm looking for. However, they invariably have the bottom drilled for overflows/returns. I am planning on going with a Calfo overflow with Bean Animal's style triple drain. Can I silicone square glass pieces over the bottom holes and go from there?

just put a bulk head and plug it. i don't think the glass or silicone will hold

I think a threaded bulkhead with a plug would be your best bet. If it's a glass tank you could use a piece of glass with silicone to cover and seal the hole. If it's acrylic then you could use a piece of acrylic and use the appropriate acrylic glue to cover and seal the hole, So you have options. By using a threaded bulkhead it leaves the hole there in case you want to use it for something else later.

plugged bulkhead is always best
