I've got some live rock from an old 55g i used to have up. it has now been dried for over 3 months now because i moved to another state and kept the empty tank with my brother-in-law

can i add it into my dad's 20g nano? or should i cure it first?

it should definitely cure in a seperate container, then it would be fine to use

even if it is sun dried? i know you can use dried corals in fish only systems. there should be no die off

I personally would soak it in dilute regular Clorox bleach for a couple of days.
It will not have any die off but all of that stuff that died is still kind of mummified inside and the bleach will oxidize it.
If it is a small rock you need to do nothing to it and just put it in.
All of my rocks I collected and bleached to remove dead animals.
But you have to use "Regular" bleach, no scents or extra whitening
