Hi gang,

I'm getting ready to set up a glass 180gal fish and hardy invert tank and I started to think about total weight (within the tank). Is there some upper limit of "heavier than water materials" you could add to the tank. In other words if you add up the weight of sand, live rock, decorations (tufa rock etc). How much would be too much to make you worry about cracking the bottom pane. or bowing components?

Thanks a lot

I have seen tanks filled 75% on one side with sand. I have put rock into a tank up to the top to cook it. I really don't think that sand and rock will bust a tank.

I have seen at my lfs a 180 tank filled to the top with live rock to cure they estimated 200 lbs of rock on a bare bottom!!!

Wow, who would have thought a pane of glass would hold so much! Hurrah for the inventor of tempering!

Looks like I have nothing to worry about
Thanks a lot

As long as the bottom is supported equally then you should have no problem. It's when there is uneven support that the bottom can crack.
