View Full Version : Coral Suggestions?

Hi folks,

Any suggestions for what corals (preferably soft) I should put on the left side rock? Just looking for ideas--I'm looking for something less eclectic; possibly only 2-3 species for a more striking look.

Thanks!

How long have you been set up, and what are your water parameters and lighting? Sorry if you've dealt with this already - just don't want to assume anything. OK, assuming you've been up for a good while, cycled, water quality good and stable, then you could start with something easy such as mushrooms, although they don't always stay where you put them and tend to like really shaded spots. You can also try green star polyps, which will tend to spread toward the light. One caveat here - if the GSP get established they grow like weeds and can begin to take over. You can control that by staying on top of the spread and harvesting as needed. After you're comfortable with those, you can move on to other soft corals, and even some LPS, depending somewhat on your lighting. the LPS will do OK under PCs in my experience, if the tank is not too deep and/or you keep them near the top of the tank

Thanks--that's an earlier pic but I appreciate the concern.

Mushrooms don't "do it for me" at this point though I've had plenty of experience with them. I'm putting GSP on the righthand side to resemble a tree (LFS has it like this and I like the look). The tank has T5 lighting---which LPS would you recommend? I'm so bad about colors and placement; thank God I'm not a designer.

As a beginner with corals I had good success with open brain [until the CB nipped it to death :(] and Euphylia sp. such as hammer/anchor and frogspawn. put them midway up or near the top and your T5 should easily do the job. I would also suggest target feeding the mouths with a pipette or turkey baster. go to the corals forum for some suggested recipes for coral foods. I blended angel fish food 1 or 2 with zooplankton, selcon, and some bits of silverside. others have done well with other things - go have a look - and best of luck! I love LPS corals - color and movement is really cool

You can't really go wrong with zoanthids. Thet come in enough colors that you will have multiple options. They don't need as much light and they would cover the rock very well.
For LPS options try the Euphylia's mentioned above or a candy cane / trumpet coral.

Xenia is nice, although it can spread like crazy if you are not careful. Look at Yumas and other rics too.
