have something odd growing amongst the rocks in my tank, it looks like silicon strings (however there is no silicon in my tank) and it seems to grow around rocks. It can be seen in the picture attached. No idea what it is. Is this good news or bad news?

no, it's white, and it grows in long strings. Another reefer suggested it is a sponge on a same thread that I thought had not posted. I have a huge aipstasia problem as well, that's a different story of it's own.

do they stretch and retract like worms?

I have them in my tank, they do not retract and grow in strings about 1/8 thick and up to about 2 or 3: long. They grow in the shaded areas. My best guess is that is a kind of sponge. I have had them for years and have not seen any adverse reaction so I would not worry about it.

very glad to hear others have it as well. Only negative effect is when they try to grow on top of zoo's. Guess a angelfish would probably eat them, right?

I do not think an angel will eat it. Larger angels eat sponge, but only certain sponges.
