Hey Mike,

I'm Fiona, I'm Scottish and live in France. My only experience with fish before my first reef tank (which is 3 weeks old) was eating them.....I'm a rugby fanatic and also love cooking. My tank is a 16 Gallon reef tank and I love it so much that I am already making grand plans for knocking holes into all the walls in my house and installing tanks.......

Oh, I'm 34 years old but still 18 in my head.....

I joined a couple weeks ago but never gave a formal introduction. Kinda dumb...sorry.

My name is Jay Spencer, Im from Oregon, I have had fish most of my life, saltwatr fish only for 8 years and just started my 50g reef about 13 months ago. I dont think I have ever been involved in something that is surrounded with so much information! It is fun to study and learn and watch. My knowledge of keeping a reef has grown quickly since I came to RC.
Thanks for letting me on board!!!!

Jay

Hey, dont think Ive ever introduced myself either. Im Ryan, live in Long Island, and been reefing for about 2 weeks now. This site is my savior, as I have seen all mistakes everyone avoided and was more prepared for my 39g cadlights setup then I ever thought I could be. So far nothing has surprised me, and I thank RC for that. Ah, Im 27 years old. Thanks to everyone who posts, talk to you all soon!

*stands up and clears throat*

My name is Jenna and I'm a reef addict...and for the record, I don't want to be cured!

Seriously though, I'm 38, been keeping aquariums for over 30 years. I started a reef tank a few years back but then moved so had to tear it down. I finally gave into temptation and am starting a tank up again. This time its a 10g since that is the max size our apartments will allow...even on the first floor. Beyond my aquariums I love swimming, reading, photography and crafts. I'm a soccer/football and hockey fan. NASCAR is alright but they've gotten way too tame lately. Oh yes, I live in the plywood state...Florida.

Hi, I am Tom. I have been keeping aquariums for many years but in October of this year, bought my first reef tank. I have kept African cichlids, Loricarid catfish and now also have a 120 gallon monster tank with 2 Arowanas, a gar and Clown knife. I drove 4 hours to Atlanta to move this 65 gallon stocked tank and the inhabitants, a fox face yellow tang, 3 damsels, 2 Pajama clowns, clarki and percula clown along with zoas and mushroom anemones. Had 30 gallon storage totes and aerators that quit working about 1/2 way home. Somehow everything made it even though I mixed the new sea water from tap water. I have learned so much from all of you and set up the Phosban reactor and now only use RO water. A new skimmer is also being delivered Friday. I am employed as a crustacean taxonomist and have described some new deep sea species of tanaidaceans and coauthored a Florida guidebook to Tanaidacea. Hobbies are photography and orchids.

Great to meet you Mike. Stick to being an electrician at least you can always find another job. I identify and count macroinvertebrates under the microscope all day. Luckily for me I work for an environmental consulting company and this kind of work is needed. They sent me to training recently so I could identify ichthyoplankton. We have a contract for a Gulf of Mexico study where this is needed. These skills are not in high demand.

I apologize for not having done this sooner :]

My name is Leilani, I'm 25. I'm currently juggling full-time work as an accountant and full-time school at a community college. I've got just 1 more semester until I transfer to university (I can't wait!) and pursue my dream of becoming a high school teacher. I live in Orange, CA with my boyfriend, his brother (who happens to be one of my best friends), a little chihuahua mix named Chompo, and a 29 gallon freshwater tank.

My biggest hobby is just that- hobbies. Knitting, video games, computer games, ice hockey, drawing, playing guitar, learning the drums, and of course, fish-keeping. What can I say? I love learning new things.

I'm a complete newb with saltwater. I've had my freshwater planted tank for a couple of years now. I've been reading and planning on a reef setup for what seems like AGES but don't have an actual aquarium set up yet. My plan so far is a 10 or 20 gal. I don't think I'm going to buy new, because when I did that with my freshwater I found 5-6 people looking to get rid of what I'd JUST bought. Seems like a waste to me. So, I'm keeping my eyes open for the right deal in the right place.

Anyway, it was nice to read everyone's post.

Be seeing you :]

I don't have any experience whatsoever with any kind of fish-keeping.....guess that makes me a clean slate :)

No tank yet, and most likely won't have one for many months, but I plan on learning all I can in the meantime.

hi-grant, welcome to rc buddy, try reading the stickys at the top of the forum for some advice as well, my only advice is providing you can afford one get the biggest tank and sump you can, saves breaking the tank down to upgrade later, good luck

Hi, my name is Mackenzie. I'm 16 and I live in a very small town in southeast Indiana called Milan.

I've had aquariums all my life, and i've been in the saltwater hobby for about 2 years or so. I have a 55 gallon reef aquarium, and i'm getting ready to set up a 14 gallon nano-cube aquarium as a reef also. I also have 4 cats and a corn snake named Monty (NO, not after Monty Python). Reefkeeping is one of my favorite hobbies among photography and archery.

I currently attend the local high school, which has about 400 students, and I plan on going to college and getting my Ph.D. in Marine Biology. I plan on studying either the reefs, or sharks!

Good Idea Micheal-

My name is Jodi- I am a veterinary technician here in Connecticut. My husband and I are just starting to put together a 180gal tank. This is going to be a project. We had a 55 gal reef for awhile and had to give up due to a move. Now we are ready ( we hope lol) to get back into the hobby, and decided if we were going to upgrade, we mine as well go much bigger. I LOVE rc and everyone on it. We have learned so much and get great responses to our questions. NO doubt we will need LOTS of help over the next year to get this project going.

Thanks everyone!!!

Btw HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yoyo whats up peeps. I also am sorry for not having done this sooner. My name is Matt and im an unemployed 22 year old newbie reefer. I had been doing research for at least 4 or 5 years now and i had a 55 gallon tank that shattered. Thankfully i only had 2 clowns in it and they both survived but i gave them to a friend. I'm planning a 120 currently but if my plans for this new job come through i'll be moving and wont realy have any opportunities for a fish tank. From what i hear the military is a pain like that, having you go all over the world all the time. Anyway. . . also I just wanted to say that i got contact lenses today and they are the greatest thing evarrrr! ! I forget i have them and go to put on my glasses and then remember and yea . .. . So thanks to everyone here who answers all my dumb newbie questions and I figure ill be able to get back into the hobby in a few years once i find out if I'm in or not. So thats just a whole lot more time for me to troll the forums here and get me a better ejumacation on fishes. :)

Matt

Right now the plan is for somewhere around a 75 gallon tank, with a 25 gallon sump.

I will say I don't think I've ever seen a hobby where there is so much disagreement.....look at deep sand beds.

One school of thought says don't use one....its useless
Another says use one, but don't stir it..or you'll kill your fish
Another says use one, but make sure to stir it...or you'll kill your fish
Another says use one, but make sure there is a dead-water space beneath the bed.

It's frustrating as hell.

We live in a small town Catlegar B.C. and just set up our first reef tank in oct. Years ago I had several FOWLR's and puffer tanks....this summer I started to get the itch again and have always wanted to do a full blown reef. So here I am and yes I think I am an addict

thank you all for your help, its nice to meet you all - - - - until next time!

Quick Version: My Name is Jason and I like Fish

Hello, been here a few months but never really introduced myself. My name is Jason and I do security in VT. I play bass on the side and have always been into animals of one form or another. When I was about 12 I got a part time job at an lfs taking care of the tanks in exchange for snake food or any reptiles I wanted. They only had freshwater in the store but they had a saltwater tank at home with a state of the art Bioball system (it was at the time) Ever since then, I've always wanted to do a SW setup but remembered how much trouble and money they dumped into it.

Almost 20 years later, a 45 fell into my lap and I took it. I saved half of the water out of the tank and left the crushed coral in it with enough water to keep it wet. That was my first mistake as I also got whatever nastiness was in the tank too. After ALOT of water changes and vacuuming, I got rid of my algea problem and stocked it with too much too fast( MY FW experience is to blame). Once I realsied what I had done, I started doing water changes to keep up with my bioload and keep my tank somewhat stable.
10 to 15 gallons a week seemd to keep my nitrates at 30ish ppm. After the Icestorm a few weeks ago killed all of my fish but one, I decided to start over and use the knowledge I've gained here to do things better this time around. I changed out my nasty CC for a DSB and am just letting my tank do it's thing for awhile. My nitrates are gone and I'm down to a 5 gallon weekly water change which is much nicer on the wallet.

Current tank status: 45 tall 5" dsb 50 lbs of rock. Coral beauty, 2 hermits, 30 vibex, 1 cleaner shrimp, 8 hitchiker polyps

oh, i also run a 72 gallon bow front FW tank at the office with my lieutenant. maybe ill throw a pic into my gallery for those of you interested in seeing it! It was his FOWLR tank at home but he upgraded and gave me this tank, i was still in the apartment so we set it up here and kept it FW becasue with the guys in the office and the wacky heating system, this place can not be trusted with a SW tank! (like a guy i know in MANHATTAN that thought it would be funny to put a live lobster from the market into a guys SW tank in the office!---NOT FUNNY) trivia piece, my office was used in the movie serpico 1973 and clockers 1995 and they just filmed an episode of "life on mars" right out front - - - -pretty cool!

Greetings,

Looking forward to learning more about the hobby on RC. I did fresh water for 17 years. (Oscar tank only) About 3 1/2 years ago, I converted my tank to saltwater. I'm still learning and unfortunately have made some mistakes. My setup:

Hardware:
80 gal.
48" Outer Orbit HQI light
Remora Protien Skimmer (Rio pump)
Emperor 400
Two Rio+ 1700 (Using only one, too much current)
Use Rio 12HF to return water to tank for water changes

Fish:
3 Blue Green Chromis
1 Maroon/Yellow clown
1 Coral Beauty
1 Powder Brown Tang

Two anemone
Several stripped mushrooms
Waving Hand
Star Polyps
Leather Cabbage

Cleaner Shrimp
Several red hermit crabs
Several red scarlet crabs
Nas. Snails

So, far the tank is coming along, but still working on cutting back the alage. Water changes, pick, water changes, pick....

Again, I'm glad to be apart of the RC community!

Danny

Hi

My name is Kirk I've been hanging around RC for about 8 months now but just paid up the other day. Money well spent to support a great site. I have been a fish nut for well for as long as I can remember. I'm 55 and live in SE Texas right on the Gulf of Mexico. I'm a fisheries tech for the state working with population dynamics of marine organisms ( I catch, count, measure and identify marine organisms). Perfect job for a fish nut.

My son and I have a 8 mth old mixed reef which came through hurricane Ike surprisingly well. We lost a couple softies and a yellow watchman who showed up 5 weeks later in the sump. We have a saying around here " The family that reefs together goes broke together".

Michael thanks for starting this thread very good idea. I like your posts very helpful and knowlegeable but not intimidating to us newbies. You along with a host of other really good people make this site the valuable enjoyable tool that it is.

My name is Brian. I'm 29, married, and have a little girl about to turn 2. I'm in the IT field and outside of work and family I like to spend money playing with cars. lol

I've been interested in saltwater for a long time but have never really had the time to get one going. I've had a few friends over the years with sw tanks and loved looking at them. Anyway I've got the bug now and the wife is interested in them too.

this is a great idea for a thread!

I guess I am not really 'new' to RC.. but I'll post my information anyway, since I've only been on here a few months...

I started out with a 10 gallon freshwater tank about 3-4 years ago (maybe more).. and have kept a 20 gallon sw, a 55 gallon reef for a while (until a scourge of greenwater for more than a month got me to get rid of it.. that was long before RC and many other internet sites), and I had a 75 gallon Discus/stingray tank before the move required I sell it. I currently have a 20 gallon reef; soon to be upgraded to a 30 cube. I'm finally able to be in a position to go all out with the next tank.. I'm going to have MH lighting, a fuge, SPS corals, clams, the works. It is exciting!

Non-reef related.. Hmm.. There have been a lot of exciting changes in my life lately.. Since this summer I have gotten engaged :-), moved 3 hours away to Long Island NY, got a new job at a great company (I'm a Recruiter and I LOVE IT).. and I'm currently saving for the wedding and getting ready to buy a house with my fiance. (neither are easy to do with this hobby, for sure)

Other, non reef related hobbies.. I really like boating and skiing (downhill and water) and playing video games. I still have the original nintendo and enjoy playing that now and then.

I was in the band in highschool.. was on the swim team, and played soccer.

wassup guys and girls, i'm Jarrod. i"m from Jacksonville Florida, born and raised. i'm a true florida boy, i love anything that has to with the water (boating, jet skiing, snorkeling, fishing- fresh and salt,). i'm 22 years old, i work on cars for a living, its what i've always wanted to do, i love being outside all day and getting dirty. i have three tanks, a 28 gal. freshwater community, a 55 gal. south american cichlid, and a 36 gal. saltwater. i originally planned for it to be a FOWLR, but i've had crazy ich probvlems, so i recently decided to try coral instead of focusing on fish. i only have a few small pieces so far, but i hope it will be a nice reef tank someday

Hello All:

My name is Robert, I'm from South Florida and love Bull Terrier's. (and my Wife) I have a 55 with two trigger's and a clown. The tank has been doing well for years, yet has improved as my husbandy skills and knowledge have increased to meet the demands of my new reef tank. I am about four months in the rescue of a 46 bowfront, that was not well cared for. I have learned so much in this time and glad that reef central is here.

Hi. My name is Gwen and I am new to the hobby and to forums. I live with my three rescue dogs, Sacha, Roxie and Jackie and my reef aquarium. I lost my pair of Frontosias and Blood Parrots that I had for 10+ years from a storm that left us without electricity for a week. I converted my 55 gallon to a saltwater tank, which I thought would be inexpensive, already having the tank, right? Big surprise. I won't even admit to myself how much I have spent. Anyway, found Reef Central last month and I wish I had found it sooner. Thank you everyone for all the information. And thanks Waterkeeper for all the wonderful articles! Oh, and Michael, I'm older than you too.

Hello all, I have been lurking for several months trying to learn a few things. Figured it was about time I introduced myself…I have been a FW guy for about forty years and currently have 11 tanks running. The last three years I have been into freshwater inverts and have 9 varieties hence the screen name. If you have any interest about that sort of thing, you can see some pics of my shrimp here. http://flickr.com/photos/nwinverts/page2/

I decided it was time for a new challenge and intend on starting a mixed reef , after I finish collecting the equipment to do so. I have learned a lot already from you folks and realize I have much more to learn and spend. You seem to have an amazing group here. It’s great to see what a knowledge base you have established …

Ok, Ive been reading this thread and since I'll be in this forum quite a bit now because Michael had to start a corner tank thread here, I figure I'll let you guys know a bit about me. Been keeping reefs for over 20 years now. Back when I started, there were only a couple magazines that could be read that had any info in them. I'm from Pittsburgh Pa, and learned mostly from a very young upstart that worked at a LFS here. At those times alot came from word of mouth and trial and error.

Back then mostly all that was kept was soft corals and a few LPS. From my point of view there have been alot of changes, but alot has stayed the same. Bare bottom tanks were all there were for reefs because no one knew anything about live sand. I've spent alot of time and money on this "hobby." I sure wish RC was around when I started.

By the way, the youn up-start was Anthony Calfo, and I blame this all on him. And like Waterkeeper, I'm old.

Also, because of Michael's corner tank thread I found this one and might as well intro too.

I'm Tim, been doing salt water, for the second time, for about 4 months. The first time was about 10yrs ago for a 2yr period during school and at that time I flooded more apartments learning to build overflows and sumps, killed alot of corals and fish and basically had disasterous results that accompany an impatient young guy...

So not much has changed... LOL. Ok, i've only flooded my basement once, i've lost a few fish, but generally things are good this time around... no they are excellent honestly.

What's kind of unique about my setup is that i have a 92gallon system supported by a 175gallons sump with fuge. I knew from past trial and error that the larger the volume of water the more stable, so I went big with the sump because I wasn't allowed to have a 500gallon Display in the living room.. (yet).

Im a hi-tech gadget guy so i'm running a lot of tech on my system, or will be within the next few months. This includes auto-dosing for balling method, ultra-lith system as well as auto-top-offs, reverse photo-period fuge, and ozone.

Nice to meet all of you out there.

Kirk--please join us on this site--your experience would be appreciated

my name is ted i work 3rd shift at a company called merit gear http://www.meritgear.com/ i started this hobby about 4 years ago the guy that got me into it gave me a ton of bad advice but got me hooked, i'm special as i get to go to foster and smiths only retail store and use to attend the reef club meetings in the Live Aquaria aqua culture coral facility and see their set-up and their divers den fish and coral section and so on, but the people at DFS are super nice and give me great deals and some freebies every now and then too. i dream of having a 300+ gallon tank but have to settle with my little 90 (for now)

Hey everyone, Eric Richardson here. I was part of this group years ago (tried to go back and find my original name unsuccessfully) I used to have a 75g reef and 110g predator tanks. I got out of it because of the amount of travel and public speaking and training I was doing at the time and ignoring my tank so I donated them to a friend (which are still successfully running)

Anyway, I run the sales department of a great real estate software company, a la mode (http://www.alamode.com) and I've been there for 11 years. I'm also a successful REALTOR (don't throw things at me :) and my website is MyOklahome (http://www.myoklahome.com)

Now that I'm home I got the itch again and bought my 50g tank, 50 lbs. live rock and 50lb sand for a good base. The tank is currently cycling.

I bought a Current USA Outer Orbit light to give proper lighting to my corals I'm planning on keeping.

What I have learned coming back to the hobby is PATIENCE. I'm satisfied watching my tank just simmering. In that time I am doing a TON of homework about what to have in my tank.

Sorry for the rambling but that's about it. I love coming on here and drooling over the "Large Reef Tank" strings. But then again, my tank is beautiful and it's perfect for my home.

Thanks all!!!:p :p

Hello, My name is Bruce. I have been reading post here for several weeks. Learning everything I can before I flush to much $ in dead critters.
I picked up a 125 tank and a bunch of stuff several years ago when a friend of mine moved. It was set up as a fish only tank so some of it I wont use. I'm in the process of building a stand and a canape that matches the rest of the furniture in the house. I will probably start a build thread when I get a little further along with the stand. Work may slow down the process though. I fell in love with reefs many years ago when I did some diving in the South Pacific.

Pretty sure I did this once before, but her it goes.

Hello all, my name is Lonnie and I just recently got into this great hobbie(habit). I'm 40 years old and have two kids(5 and 9) and a wife. My other hobbies are drag racing and working on cars, I teach at the University of Northwestern Ohio. And yes I have a 76 Maverick with a 6-71 blower on it.

I have had freshwater fish for a few years and always wanted a saltwater tank. Within the first month of deciding to do this I went from a 55 gallon to a 65 gallon and now am looking at a 90 but I know it won't be big enough, so I'm going to keep going with the 65 and upgrade to a 180 or 220 in a year or so.

My 65g has been up and running for almost three months and seems to be doing quite well. I have a pair of clowns, a sailfin tang and a blue face angel in there at the moment. I know I will be in need of a much larger tank, don't send the fish police after me. I have recently started looking at corals and such and want to start adding some soon. I also have been building acrylic sumps for a few people and I am getting ready to start on a frag tank for another friend. I've been tossing around doing a custom tank for myself 4' x 4' x 30" with a center overflow and return. Just need a place to put it.

 scott, you should totaly change your name to "thread pimp"

i guess i'll introduce myself

my name is ted i work 3rd shift at a company called merit gear http://www.meritgear.com/ i started this hobby about 4 years ago the guy that got me into it gave me a ton of bad advice but got me hooked, i'm special as i get to go to foster and smiths only retail store and use to attend the reef club meetings in the Live Aquaria aqua culture coral facility and see their set-up and their divers den fish and coral section and so on, but the people at DFS are super nice and give me great deals and some freebies every now and then too. i dream of having a 300+ gallon tank but have to settle with my little 90 (for now)

what a cool idea for a reef name here-----thread pimp----hmmm might be great to change to that.

Ted, if you go through the Capn Log Blogs there are references to probably over 500 threads on Reef Central. It helps you learn the way around on this web site.

Hey all, my name is Matt. Young pup (to most) from Alberta Canada. Been here for over 6 months, bought a 24G on somewhat of an impulse and have been helped out here ever since. Didnt really know the whole story on SW, but have the bug now. Just finished the last coat of Varathane on my new tank stand about an hour ago so I finally get to upgrade to a whole new set of problems. I'll be around here for a while!

Thanks to all - and RC in general, makes this a lot easier... and possible!

Hey guys, my name is Steve and I'm 42 going on 25, living in Maryland, USA. I've just started my first 75 gallon reef tank and under the stand is a 29 gallon sump that I have installed several baffels, a refugium, and a ASM-2 skimmer. For my lighting I have a Tek light w/ 6 T5 bulbs. ((3- ATI Blue Plus,1-ATI Pro Color, 1-UV Super Blue Actinic, 1-UV 75/25) Thanks to GrimReefer) My close loop pump is a Panworld that moves 1200GPH and a 7.5 Mag for the sump loop. There is about 100lbs. of rock and 2 - 3 inches of sand. I've done freshwater for the last 15 years and thought after seeing my brother-in-laws reef tank, that I might take a drive myself. As of right now, the tank has been fully running for 3 weeks and my tank is going through a big algae bloom (Long Hair) I've started dosing vodka and tomorrow I will be buying a phosphate test kit. I have a clean up crew but I could use a few more turbo snails. I've done enough reading to know that it takes time to get a tank established, so I'm not worried about the algae bloom, In time with proper care, it will go away. By trade, I'm a building engineer, so I love to tinker with mechanical systems, which has been half the fun for me with designing and building my system.

I saw WaterKeeper's and Michael's post and thought I would intoduce myself. Thanks and I look forward with reefing with all of you.

I'll add alittle more info and ask my first question. First a quick run down on the stocking in my tank. Fish first...1 Pajama Cardinal, 2 Yellow Strip Maroon clowns, 1 Lawnmower Blennie, 1 Coral Beauty Angel, 1 Sailfin Tang, 1 Pacific Blue Tang, 1 Yellow Eyed Tang, 1 Fish I collected in Hawaii(no idea what it is), 3 Yellow Tangs, and a dozen or so Blue/Green Cromis. In the frag tank still debating if I should add to the main tank...1 Fox Face, 1 Niger Trigger, and two more Lawnmower blennies. Invert next posting and then corals. Now for the question...How do I get a quote to appear with my postings? I have a short saying that I feel really applies to reef keeping.

tco17
01/02/2009, 10:30 PM
Now for inverts. 1 Long Spine urchin, 1 Pencil Urchin, several Pink Urchins that where collected in Hawaii, 1 Coral Banded Shrimp, 1 Purple Reef Lobster(I don't see him very often but just when I think he dead and gone I see him again). 5 or 6 Sea Cucumbers, 15 or 20 Brittle Stars(also collected in Hawaii), countless snails and hermits, and countless Mini Brittle Stars. Corals on the next posting. Of course in my previous post when I said "D.Y.I." I meant D.I.Y. Having spent 10 years in the Navy I have just about reached my lifetime limit for acronyms. Also if it is not obvious to everyone by now spelling was not my strong suit in school. Hopefully I will still be able to get my point across.

I am so new that tommorrow I pick up my new 110 gal waterbox. Been doing a lot of reading. My new system comes with a sump and all the goodies in the cabinet. The only thing it does not have is a RO. It is a used system that I found for free the guy had to move and could not take it although he took all the critters and rock. (left the sand) If I knew what I know now I would have saved the water but I drained it. I have a few questions.... How long should it take to cycle the new water? I live not to far from the Pacific Ocean can I get rock and snails from the tide pools at the beach? Any book recomendations?

Thanks

Hi, I'm Amanda. I'm brand new to reefing. When I said "brand new", I mean my boyfriend and I just set up our first 14 gallon Oceanic BioCube earlier tonight. I've been a casual fresh-water keeper for a while, and recently decided to make the leap.
I'm 26 years old, live in the Tampa Bay area in Florida, and am finishing up my MA in mass communications. My other hobbies are watching hockey and baseball, video gaming, and positively spoiling our pug. No really, he's spoiled rotten.

My name is Kevin Buckley; I'm from Land O' Lakes Florida. 5 yrs ago I tried a 12 gallon salt tank but got frustrated and quit. About a year ago I decided to give it a try again; I have a 150 gal tank with 40 to 60 gal sump from Craig’s List that included everything: water, rock, fish and more. It has been a learning experience; my biggest problem is I believe I inherited a mantis shrimp. I have been trying to capture the mantis with no luck; I have already captured a pistol and will most likely have to take all the rock out to get the mantis. I have started slowly adding corals, and enjoy purchasing the frags and growing them.

Be sure and read the threads at the top of this forum by water keeper.

After you add your live rock it takes about 3-5 weeks to cycle your tank.

Not 100% sure but believe he is on the bottom. I hear the clicking and have a general idea. I have rocks splitting and large holes forming. I have lost a six line wrasse, emerald crabs and shrimps. I have tried the clear plastic bottle trap but when I bait it, the bottle gets swarmed with the cleaning crew. I'm trying live peppermint shrimp but no luck. I haven't tried the pantyhose trap yet.

I suppose I can share a little about myself. Even though I've been member a little under a year I spend most of my time reading and learning and asking questions. I am 35yrs old and sell drugs for a living (legally even). I have a wife (who tolerates this hobby) and 2 daughters (almost 3yrs and just over 2 months). We live in the wonderful upper peninsula of Michigan. I love hockey and enjoy hunting and reading.

I have always liked the saltwater fish but never tried one due money and time. Took a trip to Florida early 08 and saw my brothers cube and said to myself, "It is time". Came home and started buying. Currently have a 90G (would be much bigger if not for the wife) with a 55G sump. I found this site a little to late to fix all my buying mistakes but I am slowly correcting them. My current status on reefing is I know less than I should and enough to cause a lot of problems.

Thanks for all the help and information that all have supplied.... even while not knowing you were doing it!

Hello Everyone ^_^

My name is Darlene, from Memphis, TN. Originally I never was interested in Saltwater tanks or any fish of the kind lol. Untill I was introduced to it by my better half. He showed me the step by step process and how corals grow and what is needed for the tank. Of course it took a good few years to where I finally gave in. Probably because of him taking me to saltwater shops to where I fell in love with all the diffrent colors of corals out there. Now I can say I have my own 20 gallon nano tank. I have had it for a good few months now started slow. Some of what i have came from his 90 Gallon tank. But a few I have bought here in town and I must say my fave coral of all are Blastos ^_^ but here is a link to the pictures

P.S. The live Rock are not Grey lol they just turned out that way when I took the picture under Antic Lights and it made the corals more brighter... This link I have posted also ont he Main New to the Hobby thread. Anyway Enjoy and thanks

If you add LR from an existing tank it is almost instantaneous. With uncured LR it can take several weeks depending on the rock's condition. The tide pool rock will probably work but expect it to have some dieoff at higher reef temperatures. In adding your own collected specimens the answer is, yes you can. The only hitch is not all specimens do well at reef temperature if collected from cooler waters. Some temperate water species adapt well but other can't make the adjustment. Here a QT tank is a very good idea as you can raise the temperature gradually while observing the new arrivals reaction to the new, warmer environment. Here are some books you may consider Books (http://www.reefcentral.com/books/)

Hello, all!

Just another newbie here!
I live in Indianapolis, and have just finished my 3rd week of cycling, and still very nervous and overwhelmed by the mass of information. :eek1:

But, I think I'm slowly gaining some confidence.
Seems the general rule, which I'm following, is to take it slow! ;)

I've got a 55g FOWLR, and my params are looking good!
Seemed I had a quick spike, and everything has been sitting where it should be for the past week or so.

Anyway, glad to be here, and I'm really looking forward to perusing all the threads! (Some really GREAT looking setups out there!)

Hi. My name is Keith; I live in Virginia; 46 years old, married with 2 boys.
My BC29 is 6 weeks old today. I've been browsing RC for about a month; so much info, so little time to absorb it all.
I had a salt aquarium about 20 years ago for six months with disasterous results; total failure. This was back in the day when under-gravel filtration was commonly recommended; my how times and technology have changed.
A work colleague started up a Nano14 in his office at work and got me interested in reefkeeping again. I talked it up a lot at home, and then the family surprised me on my birthday with the BC29.
It seems that every day brings a remarkable observation and every week brings a new challenge. What a fantastic hobby!

Hi Keith

 I wouldn't tell Paul B. be that. Times have change but for the better Keith. Twenty years ago we did marine tanks just like our tropical tanks. In some cases it worked out but in most it was a total failure. I lost some really expensive fish back then, Flame angels pulled in close to $100 back in the early 80's, but if you keep with it you can have a great tank.

Haven't seen any changes in the past week or so.

Have only live rock, and did the prawn "thing".
Since my params haven't changed in the past week or so, I was thinking of putting something small (livestock) in tomorrow?

Any suggestions or feedback? Anyone?
Like I said, it's been almost a month --- well, 23 days........too soon for any livestock yet?

Hello! I am still fairly new to Reef Central. I have been out of the hobby for many years. When I was a teenager I worked at a local pet store and had several freshwater tanks. I started one saltwater tank late in my teen years but had to take it down when I joined the Air Force. I had a 100 gallon fresh water tank a few years ago until I got divorced. Who knows what happened to that tank. I have recently purchased two tanks. The first one is a 65 gallon acrylic tank with a built in wet/dry filter. At first I thought this would be a perfect saltwater tank because it came complete with bio-balls and everything! Boy has technology changed! I have learned a lot in the last couple of months. I decided to turn the 65 into a freshwater tank and I purchased a 110 gallon for my reef tank. It is still in the early build stages. I am working on refinishing/redesigning the stand. The stand was not tall enough for my skimmer so I decided to mod my stand to incorporate a side cabinet which will also allow for a larger sump. All the equipment should be in this week or next and the stand should be complete by the end of the month. I can't wait!

This site is a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate everyone who has so graciously shared their expertise!

I just joined today finally, but have been spending ALOT of time here for a couple of weeks now! Hell I think I'm addicted and haven't started setting up yet!!...lol I'm originally from Walsall but hit the m6 south as soon as I could drive.... Living in sunny Florida now! I've got a fairly large system in mind but want to do as much research as poss first to avoid as many pitfalls and heartaches as I can. Thnx to all so far for an awesome, informative site.

If it is your fowlr tank---then it would be okay to start "quarantining" your first fish;)

Otherwise IMO if it was a mixed reef then I would slowly add my clean up crew, then some hearty corals and finally add the fish(this would be about the 5-6 week)time.

Hi my name is Brandon and I'm from Boston, Massachusetts. I'm 36 and have a 19 month old daughter. I had a saltwater tank when I was in college. I think it had a Blenny, a Tang, and a Wrasse and a bunch of decorative rock. I don't think I ever tested the water, so I'm not sure it counts.

I just started a 12g Nano Cube thinking my daughter would love a few fish. I've always wanted a reef tank and have always been scared I would kill everything. I jumped into this with both feet and I'm learning as I go.

I'm happy to be here and I hope the "search" feature gets fixed soon!

Name's Matt, I'm an actuary, have two kids and when I'm not studying financial economics or risk management I'm studying how to figure out what's going on in my 44g corner pentagon tank. I also have a 120 out in the garage that is calling me at night but I keep telling it we have to get rid of my wife first...
And my weird name is a combo of my profession and my car; an 04 GTO. Thanks to all who offer their experience.

I am sorry as well as not introducing myself sooner so here it goes,

My name is Matt and I live in Olathe,KS with my wife. Olathe is just south of Kansas City. I am 23yrs old and this is my first aquarium currently its a 10gal nano saltwater tank that holds 2 false percula clownfish, cleaner shrimp, hermits and snails. The tank has been up and running about 3 1/2 months and the journey has been very exciting. I am amazed on how RC has helped me with my problems and concerns. I did a ton of research before getting into this and now i wish I had done it all on RC. I also have a 55 gal that is in storage but because we live in apts it is to big to have running so I'm currently making plans for that to get it running in the future. I want to thank everyone for making me feel at home and with getting back to my newbie questions so quickly.

well hello i guess i should do this as well.

my name is michael and im from san diego. im in the miltary. i have been in for almost 7 years now. and i will be starting my first reef/fish tank in may. why may? because thats when i move out of the back of my land lords house which is only two room to a full size house. so much more room. so between now and then i will be able to buy the best of everything for the 50g tank that i was givin for christmas.
why i decided to do a tank was because i had went and watched the new movie seven pounds, in this movie there was a tank with a jellyfish in it. when i got home i looked up jellyfish tanks, just to find that they was way out of my $$ bracket, so i decided to take a look at reef tanks, and came to the conclusion that this is a much more practical hobby to do then try and keep a jelly fish alive. :D

Hi all! Been lurking here for 5 or so months. Posted a few times but mainly learned a lot from this forum in a short time. Started in the salt water addiction in the mid 60's when living in Key West. Totally different then. Had to get out of it when we moved back to West Texas in 67'. I continued in fw untill a year and a half ago when I started my 40gl reef . Upgraded to a 90rr about 5 mo. ago. Things sure have changed over the years. Its a lot more expensive today. Also alot more is known about keeping sw aquaria. Not much of a reefer comunity here in WT so rely pretty much on this forum and the DFWMAS forum for info. Great site

My name's Cara. I'm 27 and from Pittsburgh, PA. I've been around/involved with SW tanks all my life. I remember being 5 years old watching my dad feed guppies to his panther grouper that I so aptly named "Spot." We had as many as 4 tanks running at at time over the years. Eventually all of the tanks got torn down and moved into our 90gal FOWLR which is still running. We sold 2 tanks, but the 75gal is in our garage. About 2 months ago my father and I were cleaning out the garage a little and we said... "hmmm, we might be able to park a car in here again if we set up the 75" and that was all it took. Here we are, the brand new 180 in the family room, filled up with live rock, sand and ready to cycle! The 75 is still in the garage and all 3 cars are still in the driveway...can't win them all I guess.

When I'm not sitting online reading tons of threads, I'm usually working tons of hours, at a hockey game cheering on the Pens, or having a few beers with friends. There's a ton of info that's already helped me here on the RC and I look forward to learning more! It sure is nice to be around people who don't think I'm crazy for loving "a silly fish tank" so much.

Since we're pic sharing...here's me and my brother-in-law a few weeks ago. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f359/Flower1459/DSC00592.jpg

That would be correct I believe Texxxx. There were several that preceded Debi, dc, but she was the first female on TRC I believe.

There's just so much information ratteling around up in my head, sometimes I can't put my finger on a simple answer.

To this day, I can never remember what's more toxic. Nitrate or Nitrite. :o Which one comes first ?

There....I've had to think about it for 5 minutes, but I know it's Nitrite that's more toxic, and that Nitrite comes first in the cycle.....no wiat....crap....GOOGLE ! !

ok, so I was right. But they should change it to Nitrate that comes first, simply because 'a' comes before 'i' in the alphabet. I swear, that's the only way i'll ever remember.

And Nitrate should be the more toxic one because to my ear, it just sounds more 'evil'

LOL
There, that's my newbie confession.

:(

Hello,

I'v been doing FOWLERS with my dad for over 25 years, mainly species from Florida that we catch diving. Queen/Blue Angels, French/Gray Angels, Top Hats, Rock Bueatys, and some Banded Coral shrimp. Really what ever we were able to catch diving from the Keys up to Sebastian Inlet. If you cant tell I live in Florida (Palm Bay).

I recently switch from my three Fowler tanks down to one reef tank over the last year. It's very difficult to find stuff for a reef diving with out doing harm to the environment. I seem to buy 99% of my stock now :(

I have been lurking around this site for over a year now and have learned alot. The main thing is there is always more to know.

Hello, I'm very new to marine tanks. I've had freshwater for 15 years but this is way different. I bought a 90 gal tank "kit" from my LFS. I'm not sure that the lady there knew what she was talking about. She told me the saltwater would be less maintence and that I would never have to change the water. I've had nothing but nitrate problems from the beginning. I've heard so many conflicting things about marine systems. I hope to learn alot here.

Hello all. New to the site. Looking to learn and looking for information that is actually helpful. I have been to other forums and they were about worthless. People with too much time on their hands but possess little to no knowledge and a few people with alot of knowledge with a god complex. Fake power apparently goes to ones head.
Anyhoo, regarding me, my name is Dan and I am originally from the Baltimore MD area and spent alot of time on the Chesapeake Bay as a child and teenager.
I have always had a love for the water and recently started my first reef tank with fish after several years of freshwater fish keeping.
As of right now I have a 110 gal AGA aquarium non-drilled lit by 2 175w actinics and 2 60w HO T12s, running a 30 gal sump with live rock and a Fission protein skimmer, return pump is a Mag 7, circulation is 3 Koralia 2's and a Aquaclear 70. I am planning on adding closed loop circulation some day. The tank is 6 mos old.
Well just saying Hi. I have learned more here in a few days than I have on the rest of the internet since I set up my tank. Keep up the good work and thank you.

Keep up the good work and thank you.

hi-dan nice to have you aboard

Hi. I'm a 47 year old service manger in a CaseIH tractor dealership and a lurker... The name is Ross
Been kickiing the idea of a SW tank around for a few months.
My kids gave me a 90 tank for Christmas... Been lurking on the forum daily since. Reading all I can and getting excited about reefing....I am amazed at the information on this site...

hi-ross, nice to see someone older than me on here:lol:
