Very inefficient, spend a few dollars more and buy quality the first time. What size tank and how heavy of a bioload do you need to process?

hard to adjust, don't produce much skimmate due to short reaction time, basically doesn't work well at all. they can be modified if you have already bought one to make them produce some skimmate but if you haven't don't buy one.

Worst 100 bucks I ever spent.

I bought a Octopus skimmer and it gives me beautiful dirty skimmate daily :) If you need to go HOB get an octopus! Best bang for buck IMO (not that I have tried anything else, so take my opinion with a grain of salt)

Oh but the tornado in the chamber looks really cool so they must have discovered some type of awesome technological breakthru right? ;)

Btw, after buying my skimmer and looking at how it actually works....

I could have built one for 1/2 the price without any issue. Probably $50 in plastic and $50-60 for the pump.

I have heard that before and usually people end up spending as much money building as they would have buying after a few redos. If you copied an exact design off of someone it might be different but most people want to make one a little different and do a lot of redos and adjustments before they get what they like. I'm sure after you built 2 or 3 you could start really saving money.

Yea run away, i just replaced mine with an Octopus. The seaclone produces hardly any bubbles compared to others, I had to add an airstone to get it to work much at all. I constantly had to fight with it, and it was loud.

The Octo DNW110 on the other hand is nice and quiet and produces some really gross stuff.

Octopus, ASM and Euroreef are all from the same design(er). I have an Octopus and highly recommend it.

+1 on skipping the seaclone! I'm replacing mine. Very little skimate, lots of micro bubbles. Even after the break-in. Very tempramental. Needs constant adjusting to produce anything at all. Spend a little more now or your gonna spend it later anyway.

I realize the seaclone is generally not a good skimmer. Recently I was given a free skimmer. I first created a new venturi for the pump. The new venturi doubles the air input into the skimmer, and doesn't require constant adjustment of the air valve. Then I mesh modded the pumps impeller. Once the skimmer broke in, it put out some decent skimmate. I don't have a huge bioload and I have to empty the cup every 3 to 4 days. The skimmer can perform with just minor modifications. To bad the manufacturer hasn't realized this and made the changes. The venturi is the major issue. The mesh mod was just an added bonus.

So how do you make a new venturi?

What I did was, found a tube to fit the pumps intake. Then drilled a hole in the top of the tube for a fitting. I took the plastic fitting from an air valve to put in the hole and then attached an air line to it. It looks just like any other venturi you would see on a skimmer pump. The venturi allows more water to be pulled into the pump and therefore more air. The venturi that comes with the seaclone restricts water flow.
