I want to start a bigger tank. A 125 or even a 180. The only thing holding me back is really the expense of live rock. If I started my tank with dry rock within about 2 months it should become live is that correct? Also I have a skimmer thats rated for up to a hundred gallons and im really happy with it can I buy the same one and just run 2?

its a debateable subject josh, and any comments on it could cause a riot:lol: but i think 6-8 weeks is a good amount of time for it to become live, im a big boy and im suggesting this but as mentioned you have probably opened a can of worms here:D happy new year josh

I agree,a few months and it will be colonized with plenty of bacteria to call it"live".

Your best bet, if you're going to use dry rock like lace rock, would be to use SOME LR to seed it with bacteria, coralline algae, ect... Though the dry rock will eventually become "live", you want some actual live rock in there to seed it with organisms that aren't going to just appear in your tank, no matter how long it's been there.

josh what skimmer do you have? I would just save my money and buy a bigger skimmer.

Soaking the dry rock in aerated saltwater for a couple of weeks with monitoring for phosphate is also a good practice, in my opinion.

I have always been able to find great deals on liverock ($2-$3 per lb) from craigslist and my local fish/aquarium club. If not just buy some dry rock and in about 6-8 weeks you will be good to go. Good luck :)

I might try Craigslist because my LFS Aquarium Adventure charges a crazy $13.99 per pound
