i have an established 90 gallon and i bought some macro rock. Can i just put 15-20 pounds of rock in the tank without a cycle?

the rock is completely dead and dried. its pretty much all calcified.

will this cause a small amonia spike?

15-20#'s in a 90G? yes, you will have a small cycle, anytime you put/place uncured into a cured tank you will experience a cycle of some kind. usually small!!!

Could go either way... I add base rock all the time and have never experienced any detectable trace of a cycle, but I have seen it happen in other tanks.

I highly doubt that adding dry base rock that you're sure has no life inside will add a cycle..

To be safe, you could try curing the LR in a seperate container and perform some water changes to see if you have an ammonia spike. If it does, then continue to cure the rock.

I feel like if it's dry, 'dead' rock with nothing on it, why bother curing it? I mean, there's nothing wrong with being overly cautious I guess, but why go through that trouble?
