So. My situation is as follows.
I have a 27g Hagen tank (36"x12"x18") that I got new from a PJ's Pets location for a song and dance. (funny, long story, I spent less than $8 on FW plants, and got over $40 in gift certs and coupons in return.)
Anywho, my first thought was originally to build a freshwater low light planted species tank to selectively breed blue ram cichlids for increased hardiness (inbreeding has lead to weaker genes).
But then my fascination with the Tetraodonae and Canthigaster genus puffers abides, as does my interest with certain other reef-dwelling species. (gobies, damsels, clowns)
Now, longterm/short-term.
Longterm, I want to have a 120+ gallon tank with a Diodon Holocanthus as a primary resident. (preferably a 200+gallon tank, but what shall be, shall be. ), Ideally, i'd want to have a reef tank attached to that system as a sump.
In the short term, I'm thinking that a small reef setup would be the ideal way to use this tank and to get my hands 'dirty' on my own saltwater setup.
So, that long bit of talk all being done with...
1. Is it possible to keep a Canthigaster genus puffer (thinking Papuan Toby) in a reef setup, or is that just asking for trouble?
2. Thinking of using PC lighting, What kind of wattage will I need to grow lower light corals?
3, Is it possible to use such a small reef tank as a sump in a larger tank system in the long run?
Any answers would be appreciated.
I do have some previous Fish Only SW experience, as well as a great deal of brackish and even more Freshwater experience. I'm also working at a pet store and getting everything at cost + 20%
This works well because I can get LR and so forth from our fish suppliers, including salt Inverts (only duncans and the like for Corals) and lighting. Only things I can't get is Salt mixes and skimmers.
thanks for your time!
