Not exactly impressed with many of the offerings out there, so I'm wondering if there is any recommended skimmers, other than DYI for smaller tanks

Good friend has recommended building a skimmer out of a "Glass Water Pipe" (smoking device) and using a powerhead to flow water in from the top and out near the bottom, with a wooden air stone near the bottom, to provide maximum dwell time for bubbles.

I'd prefer to buy something professionally built, however, I don't know much about reef systems and don't want to buy a lemon.

will this be a hang on tank or sump skimmer?

I know people will knock it, but if it's not an elaborate setup needing to be super-skimmed, I had an Odyssea PS-75 on a 50 hex with mushrooms and soft corals for over a year and it worked well. (Better than the CPR that was on it before.) Plan to use it on a 26 gal. species tank soon.

I agree bit would add for in sump, look at Vertex or MSX as well. Same manufacturer as Octo, different price points and options, but great quality and performance

I removed my Odyssea and replaced it with a Vertex IN-100

If you can pick up a used Typhoon skimmer than remove the outflow adjuster and hook up a mag 5 pump for above average skimming and no adjustments and no start up overflows. On Ebay you can pick up typhoons for like 30-40 bux.

Wow, bong skimmer sounds tubular.

I would reccomend buying a propper skimmer.

Ok then, a turboflotor blue 1000 would be perfect for a 50 and you can use it in sump or as a hot. You would have the coolest little skimmer on the block and it uses only 12 watts.
