Male has yellow fins and a red tail. And the female has red fins and a yellow tail. And the mail will always look brighter and more colorful overall.

Look for da wienar.... For some reason that made me laugh... sometimes the simplest humor is the best.

As for the original posted question, just go onto any major fish selling website and search for crosshatches... they will show a picture of a male and a female. It's real easy to see the difference.

males have a red tail, females have a yellow tail and really nice ones (which are very hard to come by), can be as pretty as males and have the bright gold body. Typically though, they are usually greenish yellow and have a body with less contrast and no bluish spots in the center of their crosshatches.

Call me crazy but I almost like the female better in those pics. The orange fins, yellow tail, red trigger is pretty cool looking. Both are awesome though...I'm just saying it's not like the female is ugly and the male is beautiful like in many species. Lots of color as far as that picture is concerned.

I too wonder about temperment. I've had three failed experiments with NIGER triggers who all ended up being total jerks who kicked the crap outta my Harlequin Tusk. I want a trigger though...and I love the crosshatch despite it's cost I'd pick one up if I knew the chances were VERY good that it would play nice with my puffer and HT. No more Nigers for me.

In my limited experience with my male, I've found him to be a model citizen in my tank as far as other fish go and critters go. Hasn't even bugged the firefish, or peppermint shrimp. He has however rearranged a few rocks that he didn't like near the little hole he decieded to call home, and pulled a powerhead off the wall (Korilis 4) making a royal mess.

I find that pictures of my crosshatch always "POP". they look great in the tank but even better in the pictures. My pair are model citizens. I have a puffer and a large lion fish in the tank, the puffer did chase the male for a while when first introduced but everyone plays nice now. Neither the male or female bother the lion fish.
