I have a pulsing xenia with 4 stems. They are all pulsing and look fine. One of the stems is getting narrow while the others remain thick. Is the one group getting ready to move or is it dying?

They are splitting and getting ready to move

Will they attach to something by themselves or should I catch them and attach them to another rock?

I agree--that stuff moves all over the tank. First it streches out part of its base--that part adhers to a new spot -=-and then it drags part of the coral over and splits at the foot.

Leave them alone and watch them grow and grow and grow
