View Full Version : My JBJ 6 gallon build....
FavaBean
01/03/2009, 07:35 PM
I have ordered the 6 gallon from nanotuners and I am just waiting for it to get here.... What I ordered is a 54 watt... one actinic...one 10 k... and the other 50/50... I will have the 50/50 come on at about 2 and go off at 10. While the other lights will come on thirty mins later and go off. I do not plan on puttin in a fuge at this time. If I do decide to put one in I will use a submersible light source. I am wanting to get a coralife dual timer to run everything... I am really interested in just having any kind of corals except sps, clams, and anemone... I am not sure if I need more flow to begin with since I just want to start off with shrooms and low flow corals..... Well I hope some people will give me some feedback if they see fit... Can't wait to start it up this weekend...

After a week of waiting for my tank I have been told it will not be here till next Wednesday. The people I ordered it from had some problems from the suppliers... The build will have to wait till next weekend... So many problems maybe it is a sign that I should just upgrade to larger tank?

If you spent the money, start this one, and see how it goes before you get really into the nano thing. Remember that nothing good ever happens fast in a reef aquarium.
What is the GPH of that 6 gallon?

you are so right hat... patience is the key word in this... had to learn that the hard way when I first got into this hobby... The return pump is rated at 106. While I don't think that is enough for softies and shrooms I am gonna try and if need be I will upgrade the pump or stick alittle one in the tank... thanks for the reply

The tank finally arrived.... I am going to set it up Friday night... I have about ten pounds of rock that has been sitting outside for about three weeks. I will go buy a piece to help with cycle. I am going to put 5 pounds of sand in also... any suggestions or comments?

Are the rocks that you have outside cured or curing or is it dead rock?
FavaBean
01/14/2009, 08:30 PM
dead rock..... Some coraline algae but almost all gone.... What I plan on doing is buying a pound or so from the lfs and put it in the tank... I was at petsmart tonight and saw the real fine sugar sand that I really liked and would like to go with....

Well after setting up the tank last night it seems pretty fine this morning. I am using a 50 watt hydor theo heater, 5 pounds of live sand and about 6 pounds of live rock. The live sand has big chunks in it which I will pull out when the tank has cleared up. I will post some more pics with lights on.

After almost a day it has really not been that cloudy.. The rocks were sitting outside in the Sun for about 3 weeks. They still have alittle coraline algae on them. Does anyone think I should put something in the tank to help the cycle or it will cycle? I have some algae wafers that I can use. I am thinking about running chemi pure and filter floss for my filtration in the bank chambers

Everything looks to be good!
The tank will cycle on it's own just give it time.
You can add some more rocks it only filled half way. Add the rocks now to prevent a mini cycle later.

Well after the first week everything seems to be doing well... I did not do a w/c for the fact I saw some stuff that says I might kill off some bacteria... I plan on adding a clean up crew next weekend... really not sure what to pick up... I really dont want to go with crabs due to the fact I think they would like to snack on the snails... so why give them a free meal.... any comments welcome...

Nice... I'm setting up a 12 gallon nanocube. Just got sand today and waitting for it to cycle. Nice little set ups!

I did a 3 gallon water change today. I am really wanting the diatoms to go away but I guess it comes with setting up a new tank. Anyone have thoughts on what to do about diatoms. I may need to increase the flow. I am also thinking about getting a turbo snail and try that out. Thanks to everyone looking at post
LiveRound69
01/31/2009, 07:41 PM
yea snails help stir up the sandbed and increasing flow helps as well. And yes everyone has a diatom problem at one time or another if the flow isnt good. but dont use tap water..use RO or RODI water. walmart has water island stations that you can get a 5 gal container for $13 the first time and refills are about $2. Tap water has all kinds of crap in it that fuel the bad things you dont want growing in your aquarium.Such as diatoms and hair algae.
good luck.
FavaBean
02/01/2009, 03:11 PM
I do use the RODI water.... I went and bought a maxi 600 today to increase the flow... I am going to buy maybe some snails today to get a clean up crew going....

02/01/2009, 05:33 PM
You gonna use the M600 in place of the stock pump, there in the 3rd chamber? (Will it fit?)

have you tested your water yet?

Nice choice of tank, I have one as part of my system. I replaced the stock pump with a mini-jet 606 and added a Koralia nano. I might even save up for the Koralia wavemaker--might.

Mavvy.... I just put it in the main tank... I know I know an eye sore... Will have to go with that until I think of something else... to me it is not that bad of an eye sore and doesnt take up that much space....I do think it would fit in the 3rd chamber... the stock pump i believe is rated at 168... theman I have not tested the water I just believe no need to until the diatoms go away... I really do like it cherub it is not to small but not to big... I just want the diatoms to go away already but i know everyone patience...

02/01/2009, 10:22 PM
It may take awhile but when everything is in balance, the algae will go away. In the mean time it takes elbow grease, you need to wipe the glass often. It's what I rely on because I've always had bad luck with snails. Snails aren't use to eating off the glass because there's no glass in the ocean. Some will not eat diatoms, so pick your snails carefully.

Hey, no problem here. I think the stock pump sux too...I ended up putting a Koralia Nano in mine to assist. But, I want a little crazier flow, so the M600 seems to be the best option.

well I found a local person trying to sale there setup so might put a couple of snails in tonight... they also have some loose shrooms so might pick one head up and let it float around tank... I will of course test the water before anything goes in....

Well I am fixin to put the turbo snails into the tank.... I tested and everything looks good... I have 2 turbo snails...not expecting them to take out the diatoms but maybe they can help keep the sand stired up... I also bought a couple of shrooms... Wish me luck... will post pics in a min...

Here is a full tank shot... I picked up a few hitch hikers from the other tank... a couple of baby sea stars with six legs... I hope they are not the bad ones... I also picked up some hair algae a couple of little pieces... Hopefully it will not spread... any comments welcomed...o the turbos are eating the diatoms...

if you want more dynamic flow...Id suggest a stronger pump (for get which one at the moment) and a hydro rotating nozzle. It's spins around as the water flows through it...and it creates random flow to all those other places not getting any flow in the tank. I have used on for a long time now and my corals love it.
I'll try to post a pic tonight. it's funny cause I can never find any other people with the 6 gallon JBJ. I love my little 6 and will probably always keep it set up. It's just a great little place to keep a reef for me.
keep the updates coming.

I ended up getting the MJ 900 and using the Hydor rotator. (Had it on the oem pump, first-way weak.) NOW the Hydor rotates like nobody's business...but I'm still using the Koralia Nano, to enhance the flow.
Sweet 'shroom and zoas, by the way!

Lookin' good, fava! And if I get off my duff and get the 70W MH in , I'll be using a Pacific Coast Imports CL-150 chiller that I have on hand. Right now, with the three PC bulbs, the temp stays pretty steady (I put a small heater in the first chamber for if it gets too chilly).

Your clowns might start hosting in a coral. In some tanks they don't need an anemone, they adopt a substitute. Mine never did though. Darn!
FavaBean
05/12/2009, 04:52 AM
well... I am looking into a torch so maybe they will like that... right now they just rest right next to the return nozzle... if they do start breeding that would be ok... I have read that some pairs will start breeding after a couple of years... when I first put them into the tank I was worried but after awhile they knew who was who... the smaller one kept on being bullied but I never noticed any torn or nip fins...
You've inspired me to consider looking into doing this on my own. Awesome li'l tank, man!! :D

dude great looking tank so far. just becouse of how nice and clean of a setup your runing i setup my 10gal nano agin so now i have my 75 and my new found glory 10. quick sugestion not to rain on your parade or nothing but 2 clowns in a 6 gallon is 1 clown too many your water levels might be ok but how would you feel being put in a 8'x8' room with someone else and being forced to live with them. IMO i say get rid of one clown unless there a mated pair and get a shirmp of some sort for life. but just my 2cent. other then that looks great.

lovely little tank. I'm a bit concerned about the clowns. My understanding is a 10 gallon is pushing it for a pair and I think 6 looks kinda small.

the 6 looks great. I have one sitting here and hope to set it up tomorrow as a second tank to play around with. What are you running in the back? I was going to run carbon & Chemi-Pure Elite with floss on top in the overflow chamber, and I removed the black covering from the back of chamber 2 and plan to run a lighted chaeto fuge in there.

Right now I am not running anything... I used to use chemi pure but decided to take that out.... I really did notice a different... I wanted to do a fuge but went against it for right now... thanks for the comments nano...

Got my 6 set up last Sunday. Added the inverts (3 peppermints and an emerald crab & a couple frag corals I had in my now dismantled 9G, new substrate and new fully cured rock. So far it's looking good. I put carbon at the bottom of chamber 1, with a small bag of Chemi-Pure Elite on top of that and a wad of floss on the top. I made a mini refugium in chamber 2 - cut out the black plastic on the back of chamber 2, and have a small but bright Azoo Palm fluorescent light in the back, with a few pieces of live rock rubble with chaeto on top. I put a small, thin piece of black sump sponge against the right side of chamber 2 - to keep the chaeto from getting into the pump chamber. I also superglued a small piece of plastic on the back rim - works great to keep the surface skimmer in place when I lift the hood.

I don't want to take over your thread. I only have one pic - about 12 hours after set up - still had some air bubbles on the glass. The red Monti plate is a piece I kept from trimming a big one in my other tank. The mushroom on top came loose when taking it out of the 9G tank, and I have it rubberbanded to a clam shell till it attaches. And there's a small purple mushroom rock and a small Kenya tree frag that's already grown a lot in less than a week. And a small pink zoa colony. Not much to see yet really.

It's only the stock lighting - 18 watts - 3 watts/gallon. It's all the light I need for what I want to keep. Plus, the tank doesn't overheat like my 9G did that had 5+ W/G.

I've been over at NR getting some great help, but maybe I can learn some things here as well. I am a complete noob when it comes to SW tanks. Have been keeping Tanganyikans for a few years though.
I helped a friend move his large reef tank, so he gave me this cube! However it was missing the fans, pump and moonlighting. He gave me some hairy LR and I dropped in 5lb. LS. I added the Hydor Pico 800 and a fan I found in an old computer tower.

Right now I'm using the hydor evolution mini 800 - it's rated at 200gph.. which is turning out to be almost too much on my NC6, the nice part about it though is that it has a lot of water flow adjustment. You can dial it back one or two notches, I think it has 7 total settings. It fits perfectly too. You could also check out their next size up, might fit..

Looking good FavaBean, when do you plan to add more rock and livestock? My jbj was going good until I added a frag of pulsing xenia that died at night. favabean, I had a cyano problem in my 6 gal tank as well. I have no idea where I got it from. I went straight to using red slime remover and I never looked back. I started my tank late june and began having the problem mid july. (I know very soon) I had my clown in there, my yasha goby, and like 4 corals. The red slime went away completely in about a week. I saw it dying off in about 3 days. Everything is still alive and doing great. I hear alot of people recommending alternate methods before using chemicals but I did it and ive been perfectly fine. just a suggestion.

Do you still have the clowns in there, or did they die? Also just curious, but are you still running the stock bulbs? If so that could be the reason for the algae outbreak. New bulbs on a 6-8 hour schedule should help.

I sold the clowns... I change the bulbs once a year... the tank has 54 watts of pc lighting... the lights are on for 12 hours a day...

Hey FavaBean,
I haven't seen this here thread of yours for a long time! I have a NC6 too, but it's tore down now. Did you ever find a skimmer for this tank? I couldn't find one to fit a back chamber so I had to take the hood off.

hey hey cherub... I was frustrated with the tank and had to take a break... the tank no longer has red slime... I am going to try again... What kind of lights did you go with when you took the hood off?... what kind of skimmer did you go with... thanks for the reply and interest in the tank

Well first of all my nc6 was only going to be a qt. Then I decided to go ahead with my 33 gallon long and didn't want to run two tanks so I'm not quarantining anything right now. Before I shut it down I took the hood off so I could run a nano remora in the back chambers. And I mounted a 70w viper light on the front because the skimmer took up the back of the tank.

Yeah I had fun with it. Don't know what I'll do with it. It won't fit in my stand. A 5 gallon standard will fit it better.
Betcha didn't know the nanocube 6 actually holds 7.5 gallons of water.

well if you do a weekly 100% change then your tank will recycle every week, which is not what you want. i would say instead of doing biweekly changes or whatever water changes you do now, do a weekly change of about a gallon or 2, that way your tank will get new water and it wont recycle. just my 2 cents
FavaBean
02/27/2011, 09:34 PM
rastarainy... I did decide on doing weekly water changes of about a gallon or two... Also started adding some rock back to the tank...

I need some ideas on what to run for some extra filtration....
rastarainy
05/21/2011, 09:53 PM
What are you currently using for filtration?
FavaBean
05/22/2011, 07:54 AM
I am not using anything right now.... Just the live rock.... I am thinking about carbon but unsure.... What are you using?
rastarainy
05/22/2011, 09:18 AM
Definitely throw a HOB filter then and run some carbon. I'm using carbon and weekly water changes to keep the tank healthy.
FavaBean
05/22/2011, 03:55 PM
do you have any pics of your tank.... not sure how i could raise the lights up to put a HOB on the back of the tank...

05/22/2011, 04:03 PM
Well I don't have a JBJ aquarium, but you can see my 6 gallon fluval build here: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1966877
As far as the filter goes, don't JBJs have built in filtration chambers? Couldn't you just put carbon in there?

that is a video of my tank... nice looking tank rastarainy... and yes we have the filtration chambers built into the back...
rastarainy
05/22/2011, 08:06 PM
Ok well then i would buy some carbon pouches or trays (JBJ tanks have specific ones you can buy that fit the chambers) and run them. Since you don't have any fish there isn't a huge bioload but still, carbon is a must IMO
FavaBean
05/22/2011, 08:53 PM
I found some carbon and put about a cup worth of it in the back chamber.... Need to also pick up some filter pads tomorrow...
rastarainy
05/23/2011, 03:28 PM
Sounds good. I would have advised to put the carbon in a sack of some sort but your tank will be fine either way
FavaBean

i did put the carbon in a bag... I am going to go find some filter pads for it tonight...

I should have invested in a larger tank because mine looks like it is almost out of room for any corals... I am getting frustrated with my algae problem... kind of makes me not want to even bother with the tank anymore... I am thinking about trying to add more water movement but unsure what to do... all my test check out ok....
