See the yellow bases of his spines? Have you seen a porcupine puffer with that before? You can't see it very well in the photos . It is more vibrant in person

I wanted to add that I've never seen a banana eel before. It's cool as hellll. How much do they run?

FishyMel

The banana runs 399 for a foot long and go up the bigger they are.

Here is an eight incher on divers den. This guy is about as big as mine when I bought him. He doesn't have any black spots but they frequently change their pattern as they grow. Mine used to have a lot less black spots.

I'm thinking about a male crosshatch or a pair. Would they work with these fish?

how big is your tank? someone with experience keeping these fish recently posted in the reef fishes forum and said he felt his 180 wasn't big enough for a single adult crosshatch.

Do you think Polka Dot (clown) will move up the dominance chain when he gets bigger?

Also, it is hard to judge the size of these fish from pictures, about how large are they now?

Thanks for info!

Clown trigger 4.5 inches
Picasso Trigger 4.5 inches
Porcupine Puffer-4.5 inches
Purple tang-6 inches
Emperor angel- 8 inches

I don't think the clown will get anymore aggressive. People talk about triggers going jeckyll and hyde which has a little fact in it but isn't completely true. For instance I had a niger trigger that was always a little nippy and then one day he killed some fish. The point of the story was he was always a little mean.

As for more specifically clown triggers; I have had three. The first one was huge probably 7 inches and he was a little bit aggressive and always pacing which intimidated the other fish so I sold him back to the fish store. The second one I got at 2 inches and he grew up to 4.5 when he died of paint fumes; he was always super docile. Never hurt any thing. The one I have right now I got last month and is 4.5 inches and he postures just like my super docile one. I expect him to stay the same. My theory is that if you get them small (4 inches or less) and they are very tame showing absolutely no aggression in the store after watching them for an hour or so they will stay tame. If you get them with already a little aggression it just increases or they will snap and if you get them bigger than 4 inches they are already too mature and have a trigger temper ingrained into them and it will continue to get worse will continue to get worse.

hmm. I am not sure. I am talking about a 7 inch crosshatch. I have an 8 inch pelagic angel and it seems to have enought room. Why would a pelagic 7 inch trigger not have enough room?

7 inches is not full adult size, and my understanding is that they are very active. I don't know first-hand, haven't kept them. I'm going by what people who have kept them have posted.

my emperor cruises the tank, but I think of it as leisurely cruising and rock picking.

how big is your tank?

from ccambell57 01/02/2009 02:12 PM :

IMHO...Bluethroats require the same size tank as Crosshatches. People dont notice this too much as you find 1000x more small (2-4") bluethroats than xhatches and therefore they adjust to captive life.

Xhatches are usually brought in at 7-9" this time they are very active and dont fit well in anything less than 3-400 gallons.

I have a 200. I will have to do some research before I get one. Anyone know if shipping a trigger from Hawaii to Texas has a good chance of survival?

LisaD

If the shipper knows what they are doing as far as packing, and the fish is healthy, with no delays, it should make it fine.

The good Hawaiian collectors know what they are doing, and the trip is much less stressful than fish that travel from other places outside the US with poorer collection practices, longer holding, stops at customs, wholesalers, then shipping to LFS or your tank.

Beatuiful Emperor Mel...

How is your Banana Eel? Aggressive? I am considering one, or a Goldentail (I know the 2 have the same Latin name but come from different places).

The brazilian isn't the slightest bit aggressive, very docile.
