I just bought a the big bucket of instant ocean salt mix at petsmart for 34.99 on sale(Reg 44.99). Then i went to my lfs and was looking at the fish and i looked at the salt there to see how much they charged and it was 79.99. Does your lfs charge that much to? Where do u buy your salt?

I try to order salt from Dr's Foster and Smith when they don't have a heavy item shipping fee.

That's extremely expensive for IO, but yes, most fish stores have to charge significantly more than what you'd pay at a big chain like Petsmart or an online dealer (even with shipping). Most of these small businesses just don't get the bulk discounts the more global guys can get. I feel bad for them, but there's no way I'm going to pay $50+ for a bucket of IO.

My little lfs sells the IO 200 gallon box for $39, and the pet market place (big store) sells the 160 gallon buckets for >$80. They are less than a mile apart, and I have no clue why they think they can sell it for that much.

I shoulden't say this but as I have stated before most LFS are thieves . This should set many off here again. Don't bother to flame me this previous post just proves my point!!

LFS quoted me $80 for a bucket of ReefCrystals the other day. I had to pass on that deal :D

Maybe we will have to put together an in house salt mix recipe

Whats cool is I have a pet pet store that was by me for the longest time. (Family Owned) Well the son who is a year older than me was always in to salt water and his mom finally let him open a little side buisness inside of the pets store. The cool part is he is not running it like a ypical lfs would. He understands high prices and thinks it more important to keep people in the hobby by lowering his prices and in the end they will by more from him and make the same amount in the end as a petco would on that same bucket of salt. So he has very little mark up on much of his things that are a neccasity like salt. His theory is no matter what people will need salt. They will constantly buy from me if my prices are the same as a petco becuase im more convienent. He just has to try to push alot more. For being a little guy in a big hobby he doing well for him self and I go there often to talk to him cause he does know what he talking about unlike other fish stores. He dosnt try to just sell you everything possible he trys to help you first. Example like most here he dosnt believe in just dropping chemicals in he always try to solve the problem with me in my tank.

I have noitice that salt has a wide range in price from place to place for the same brand.I have also noticed that the better deal is the 200 in the box from IO but some like the bucket just for ease.
