View Full Version : Zoanthid and Palythoa Picture Post

Not sure if everyone knows this, so I thought I'd post it. There is a photo sticky at the top of this page were we can all post our polyp picture collectively. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1246758 Doing so will free up space in the forum for discussion topics without pushing questions and interesting topics off the first page prematurely. Not saying the picture aren't important, because they are. Posting all the pictures together is a great way to keep all of your picture post on the first page for everyone to see today, tomorrow, next month and next year. Just a thought .

sorry mucho....just posted new pics in my thread then saw this. What you suggest is a good idea. I'll post in the stunning pictures thread from here on out...

If only I could take good pics... :(

You take great pictures PufferP. So many will refrain from sharing their pictures because they don't have a 100 mega pixel camera. Sharing isn't about the quality of your pictures, sharing is just that, sharing. It doesn't have to be about competition, and I'm not saying that about you either PP. My point is this, if you have a camera and regardless of the camera you have and you want to share, do so, but don't feel you have to be Annie Lebowitz ( sps) .
to do so.

Should all of our pics with zoas or palys go there, and then if we want to refer to a certain pic just use the URL?

01/05/2009, 09:44 PM
It was only a request, it's not a law or rule. It was an attempt by me just to help clear up room for discussion threads and questions to stay on the home page longer. If anyone wishes to help do that, then it would be great if you would post your pictures in the Photo Sticky. Again, it was just a helpful request for all to consider.

Thanks, Mucho Reef

I posted a bunch, and as you can see, I am absolutely no photographer!:p

Those pics are good enough for me SP, thanks for sharing.

Final bump to share

Adding to MUCHO's belly bump, I'd like to add on my own supplementary "informational" request. Rather than taking a single photo, take a series of three: 1) Normal lights; 2) Actinic only; and 3) Normal lights with fill flash. I've done this with most all zoa pics I've posted in the thread MUCHO referenced. It goes a VERY long way to help get a grasp on what these beasts really look like.

This thread is getting lonely :D :D :D

If you don't mind my sharing my opinion on this.

I have mixed feelings about the picture thread. Don't get me wrong. I love the thread, and check it out whenever I see there is a new post. I think the problem is, there is very little feedback in there. I'm not suggesting we clutter the thread with posts instead of pictures, but sometimes people want to show off a new frag or nice colony and get some feedback on it. Just human nature I guess.

I definitely agree with your assessment that there isn't enough discussion in this forum sometimes, and wanted to say I appreciate it when you go back and bump discussions or unanswered posts back on to the front page. I think it's unaviodable though that you're going to get a fairly high picture to question post ratio.

Just an observation.

Opinions are great, that's what we are all here for, no problem and thanks for sharing.

Not sure why you have mixed feelings though.

When I made the photo thread a sticky, tons of people wanted it. It currently has close to 600 replies and over 45,000 views, I think that's great. The reasons I've found, just from asking around, that some don't go there is because there never knew or saw it there, or, they focus only on the picture threads in the forum. Some people desire feedback and some don't, they just want to share their new arrivals. Some post pictures just to get hits for future purchases and some just like to look to get ideas.

I received several PM's last year to create a photo sticky as many were tired of seeing half the forum filled with just picture threads. There were sellers who came here just to post pictures to sell, but never ever added any text, feedback or input to the threads. At time last year the Zoanthid looked more like the Photography forum than a zoanthid discussion forum. Pictures are great, but if the forum becomes nothing but pictures, then all of the discussion threads will be pushed off the first page and many won't see the most beneficial reason for even having this forum. Again, I'm not against pictures, the photo sticky is just another option. Also, for those who post pictures and desire feedback, if you post in the forum and traffic is heavy with discussion, that photo thread will get pushed to page 2 and those logging on in the evening might not ever see those pics. Posting pictures in the photo sticky keeps those pictures on the front page 24/7 for viewing without searching. I see it as an advantage. Either way, no one is being forced to post in the sticky, it's just another option of which many enjoy when the desire to just see eye candy by clicking on the next page in the photo sticky. Either way, no harm, no foul.

Hey thanks phurst, I just want people to feel as if they belong and that their questions really do mean something. To this day, I still learn things just from reading the most innocent post. Just when you think your post aren't important, remember that you might be helping someone and not even know it. All threads have merit and deserve some attention, don't you agree? I hope the sticky changes that ratio, but if it doesn't, well, that's ok too.

Nice chatting with you my friend.

Oh I definitely agree. I just meant I had mixed feelings about it because if you're looking for feedback, that's not where you're going to get it ;)

I definitely agree this is a discussion forum, and posting pics in order to sell definitely isn't cool. That's what Photobucket is for, right :)

I'll definitely keep posting in the pic thread, but don't hold it against me if I slip a couple in the general forum too :D I'll try to at least make them productive.

When I posted this, "This thread is getting lonely :D :D :D ", I was referring to not many pics posted there lately is all.
