View Full Version : Best HOB skimmer for a 55 gallon?

As the title says, I'm looking for some ideas for the best (and not bank breaking) HOB skimmer for a 55 gallon tank. At the moment a sump is not an option.

I am going with a TUNZE 9010... heard both good and bad about them...

The bad thing I have heard is the construction but as for skimming.. A1 all reviews. So I mean just keep in mind that you have to be careful when cleaning it.

Where in Canada are you?

I got an Octopus HOB for my 40gal. Im a member on a few forums and every one, including this one, has good things to say about Octopus.

Here is a link to a thread with basically the same question. I just purchased the Octopus BH-800s for my 58. I'm not quite sure whether I'm satisfied with it yet. I'm sure it is in the break-in period and I'm having trouble controlling the bubbles. It replaced a Coralife 65, which despite a lot of negative feedback on here, did a half-decent job and collected about a half a cup of fairly dark skimmate per week. I mainly wanted to get the ugly pump out of the tank.

i run an aquac remora with the maxi jett 1200 and it has been working great so far. About 4 months worth

I run am octo that uses resun pumps and am happy w/ it but I hear this one is better:

If you can afford one w/ the sicci pumps I hear they rock. I really have never heard a bad thing about any of the models though

I use cpr hob skimmer and no issues here

I'm currently using a Remora by AquaC powered by Maxi-Jet 1200 on my 54 corner. I had a Remora Pro with a Mag-Drive 5 pump on a 55+ show tank (FO with softies) that was probably overkill. I'm happy with the Remora.

Thanks for the links and comments!

A pump in the tank and modding the skimmer is very undesireable. Space the skimmer takes up behind the tank is not an issue.

I have a Prism skimmer on a 29 gallon softy/LPS reef and I don't find it does that great a job.
