I am fixing to attempt to drill my 180. I had my mind made up about using Mr. Beans overflow method which I think is great until I got to looking at the tank. I then thought about drilling 2 holes in the back close to the bottom outside corners with upturned PVC and durso standpipes with corners built around them making 2 corner overflows and drilling 2 more holes near the top to use as returns. I will include a quick paint drawing. Will anyone tell me why this wouldn't work? I think it would work out much better for me as I could run the 2 into one and only have to drill one hole through my hardwood floors into the basement. Thanks in advance.

I am new to drilling tanks and would like to drill mine. I think the top holes should be overflows. Don't take my word on it but it looks like if you ever have a poweroutage and no check valves on your overflow it would drain the tank and possibly overflow your sump.

The DIY crew will tell you not to use check valves because they are unreliable. Just make sure that you leave enough room for your overflows when you drill the return holes. As long as you build your overflows properly and place your returns up high then power outages should drain a minimal ammount. For more advice ask this question in the DIY section.

edit: I see you already asked the DIY crew =]

Yeah posted here first then thought it would be better suited to ask over there so I just copied and pasted. I would actually drill the 2 return holes more towards the center than I put in the drawing with PVC running outwards if need be.

Well I hope it's going to work ok, because there are 4 holes in my tank now!! Drilling is a breeze, no reason to be intimidated. It does take a while when drilling through 1/2 so be patient!! I drilled it like the drawing except the top return holes are closer than in the picture. I plan on from the bulkhead bringing a 90 up then into a durso with the 90 on the durso turning back towards the back of the tank so I can have a smaller overflow chamber.
Something like this:
