View Full Version : Glass top on nano?

I have a question. When using a HQI clamp-on light and not using the standard nano hood, is it a bad idea to use a glass top to help stop evaporation? Or will the top take away from the light itself? I’ve heard that it can cause the tank to become hotter by trapping in heat. I plan to buy a fan to blow across the glass to keep the tank cool if I do get a glass top. Any advice would be great.

Thanks

I have a glass top on my AP12 and am using a 70W Sunpod. It does help with evaporation but I run a chiller to deal with the trapping of heat.

As it may seem like a good idea you can really do ALOT more harm than good. While it has benefits such as preventing evaporation and preventing fish from jumping out, as the post above you will need a chiller. The most important reason not to is with a glass top you at really preventing gas exchange and in such a small closed system you can have slot of problems with you O2 and cO2 levels.

Wouldn’t my skimmer help with the gas exchange?

I have the 12 gallon aquapod with the 70wat MH I have the glass top on it the back chambers are open.

I rigged up a computer fan to blow between the glass top and the MH my temps stay 78-80.
