Well I did a waterchange on the QT today and when I plugged the powerhead back in, it began to make a rattling sound. I unplugged it and tried cleaning the exterior of it but it didn't help. Any ideas???

what kind of powerhead is it?

you need to unplug it, pull it from the tank and take it apart. Sounds like either you have a broken impeller or as simple as a dirty impeller or magnet and it's having trouble building speed or "rhythm" to spin up to full rpms where it's quiet. More than likely it's the later since all you did was unplug it.

stlrams88: It is a koralia 1 powerhead

JEFER259: Thanks I'll try that.

Sometimes when a Koralia (and some other A/C powerheads) start up, they will start to spin the wrong direction and make a rattling sound for a second or two before the prop gets going the correct direction. My koralia 1 doesn't seem to ever do that, but my K4 does pretty much every time. If it's doing that for more than a few seconds, there's definitely a problem, though, and it probably just needs a good cleaning of the propeller assembly. They're really easy to work on. You just twist off the front and pull the propeller assembly out. If there's a lot of calcification on that or the metal rod it's on, just soak it overnight in some vinegar, give it a good scrub and put it all back together.

There can be no air in the impeller well.

^ +1 to that as well. Did you take it apart yet?
