View Full Version : Undulate and Clown Trigger in same Aquarium?

I am getting ready to move my corals and community fish from my 90 gallon to a newly cycled 140 gallon tank. So I have been researching and thinking what I'd like to do with the 90 gallon tank. I have been increasingly interested in the triggers. I know the Undulated triggers can get nasty as they age. I know the Clown triggers can too.

Do you know if I added a young Undulated and a young Clown trigger to the tank at the same time, that there is a chance they would grow up together and leave each other alone? (Of course, no other fish at all and the tank has lots of swimming room and live rock.)

Or do I need to pick just one of them and have one trigger in the tank by itself?

If you had to choose between just the undulate or the clown, in terms of personality, ehich would you choose?

Thanks for your advice.

i would say no. the undulted is the meanest trigger and fish out there, and better for a species tank. also the clown trigg will get really big (20 inches or so?)and need around a 180G tank.

Same here. Clown trigger are bad to the bone.

I'd just do an undy trigger in the 90g.

I don't know of anyone who has grown a Clown trigger to 20" or even close in home aquaria. I think they are given a bad rap all too often.

But undulated trigs are mean. I have a 3" one that I tried to keep in my well-stocked tank and he "cheap-shotted" other fish when they would pass by his staked out territory. He never intentionally chased and terrorized other fish, but when they went by his little cave the shat would hit the fan.

I think the fish have similar personalities (both get mean, but the undulated is worse), but I would NOT try this combination.

Of course there is always a possibility that these fish may get a long, but chances are you might only have one fish left.

Well, I am new to the world of aggressive fish and so I heed the experienced members advice carefully. Once I have a living thing (fish, coral, cat, dog, hamster, horse, etc.) in my care, I want it to have the best life possible. Being tormented and eatten by another fish would not be pleasant.

I think I like the undulated trigger the best in terms of looks, but will it swim around so I can see him? Or will I have a single fish occupying a big tank that that I never see?

Thanks for your help in my decision making analysis!

As far as I know, the undulated is not a shy fish. Very bold and outgoing.

Not mine, mine is very, very bashful. Hides in the rocks if someone is present in the room. I have had it about 8 months now and nothing has changed. It even waits till I walk away before it will eat.

I guess all fish really do have their own personalities. I never had an undy, but my friend did. It was a very outgoing fish. Came out of the rocks whenever someone came in the room (expecting some food).

Fish are just like people so you never know for sure just what you'll get. I concur with the other opinions on the Undulatus...mean SOBs typically. However I've had several clowns over the years and the only time I had a problem was when I removed all my tank decor for cleaning and left a poor Miniatus unprotected. An expensive lunch that day was fed to my clown. ;-)
