I went to the LFS and bought some mollies ... acclimated them to my 75 gal salt tank. I am told in salt the mate like crazy ... anyway I figure it will be a good source of food for my bog salt fish ... good idea or bad?

hey Tom....if you want to have mollies in a salt water tank then I think it's good, but for feeding from what I've read freshwater fish aren't as nutritional because they lack the amino/amega acids of saltwater fish... can anyone elaborate on this?

i think mollies are actually pretty good, since they really aren't fw fish. but hopefully bill will chime in. he will know best.

A large part of it is the old saying "you are what you eat". Feed those salt acclimated mollies some proper saltwater type foods, heavy on the veggie matter, and they'll make a fine a meal ;)

I figured that since they are actually Backish fish "sorry if spelling is wrong LOL" they would be ok. They are eating them same I am feeding the others .... mysis, seaweed, plankton .... omega w/ vit C and Garlic. It is really a suppliment I will still feed my fish maybe less .... I figure when I go away they will be taken care of :)

Can mollies survive long term in a reef tank if drip acclimated? I'd be interested in them for providing babies for food but also for helping control my algae.

From what I've read and talked to people about they do better in salt then fresh. I acclimated them for about an hoour made sure the salinity was the same etc ... biggest thing is the PH increase. They seem to be doing fine. This is an experiment for me I will still keep up my feedings nutrition wise but if I can save some bucks by feeding less why not :).

Mollies are really brackish and hard water fish. They don't do well in regular old FW. Give them nice hard water or brackish to salt water, and they do quite well.
