Why do zoas change colors????

I have some from the same colony that I separated, now I have 3 different colors, lol. :)

All are very close to each other, same tank, etc.....

What makes zoas change/morph so much?

Thanks!

That's a GREAT question for which I don't think there is a simple answer. Color morphing is quite a common occurrence with zoanthids. They do not, however, typically morph into something completely different, so you should see strong resemblance between the morphs. If they truly appear different, then it's likely they weren't the same zoanthid to start with.

I had reverse gorilla nipples grow into an eagle eye colony and develop green centers.

Funny you should mention these polyps. I currently have some of these that are in the process of losing their dark green disks. The mouth and skirt haven't changed, but the disk color is morphing.
