Hi guys!
Can you tell us anything about the new mini-cone shown on the SWC site?
It looks like it might be the same size body/cup with a single Sicce mounted underneath to cut down on the footprint. Can you please confirm or deny this?
Thanks,
James

The "Mini S" skimmer is still in the testing phases. It is not the same size cone as the 1S, 2S, and 1A...the goal of this skimmer is a smaller footprint for those with limited sump space. As of this time there is not a solid release date or price on those...but we will keep you updated :)
BTW James, did you ever get your cone running?

Yes I did but my pump also has the dreaded leak. I have contacted Jayson about that.
My ASOR did however build an immediate foam head and pulled a ....load of nog in the day I ran it though!

The "dreaded leaky pump" will be a thing of the past in the next couple of weeks. You should be recieving contact from Jayson in that time to get the upgraded volute if you are trying to run it external.
But, Yeah, they are true BEASTS of skimmers. The cones in our "skim-off" are putting a beating on the MSX 250

Are you no longer running the cone?
jamesdawson
01/10/2009, 12:34 AM
Correct, I'm not running it right now because I need to run it external because of space considerations. I do enjoy looking at it though!
Jayson mentioned something about an "insert" for the volutes?
James
MSX-Jeff
01/10/2009, 12:42 AM
Yep :D That will be for the current volutes...the next batch of volutes WILL NOT be coming from the same "person" that mfr'd these...and they will be LEAK FREE!!

Nice!! A friend was just getting ready to order a 160 think he's going to want this instead, let us know a release date asap.

I am holding off my sump build until I can get more details on this too. The 17" requirement for the MSXS1 cone is a bit on the large side.

OK, the info I have on these so far is as follows:
Foot print: 10 X 10
Height: 23 inches
Powered by a single Sicce pump placed under the skimmer.

Thanks Rob. That's good information. I just bought an Elos70 and the footprint under the tank is so small I had to get a custom sump. At 10"x10" this is a very manageable size.
I am assuming the cone base is a little smaller in radius compared to the MSXS1. Is this correct?
MSX-Rob

Yes, it is. I wish I had more info on them right now. When I do get some better info, I will let you all know about them.

Rob,
Is this likely to be priced at or under the price of the MSX-1S?

I might be interested too. I need one for my frag tank.

It will be under the 1S, just not sure how much yet.

Rob,
Break the market wide open! With the footprint sizes of all other cone skimmers all the smaller systems don't have an answer.
If reasonably priced for those nano and small system reefers you should have a nice product to market.
Of course, the performance has to be high as well. Looking forward to hearing more details.

I may have to cut and reglue a baffle in my sump so I ca fit one of these skimmers!
What is the watt draw of the pump?
I am awaitng a price for this skimmer!
One last question. What depth can this skimmer work at?
jamesdawson
01/18/2009, 03:36 PM
Watt draw is very low on a Sicce, around 20-25 watts. It is probably the most electrically efficient skimmer pump on the market for the amount of air it produces.
The other SWC cone skimmers tend to operate best in about 6-8 inches of water. Since the pump is underneath this skimmer I don't know if that changes anything.

Sounds good. Can't wait to see a price!

Jeremy, we don't have the production models in hand, but I would say that 8-9" would be best.
The footprint on the production models will be 9.5"x10.5"...we are still working out the price, but I think you all will be VERY happy with it :D

Who knows, that may be an option. I have yet to get my hands on one of the early ones.

I'm gonna cut that baffle out of my sump tonight to make room for this skimmer!
MSX-Jeff
01/20/2009, 10:19 PM
Good luck Jeremy!
Perry: Come on man...you can hold out a little longer :) Is this for an existing system or a new one you are setting up? We are HOPING to have them in a little sooner than that...but we'd rather set a date and beat it than tell you it will be here next week and it not be in for 2 months ;)

Thanks! I can't wait! I have passed over some good deals on several other guys skimmers.
I had been set on you 160, but after seeing the info on the cones, I am sold!
I hope to get one soon!

I am assuming this is not for your 1200g system? :)

No this is fora small tank, 65 gallon with 20 gallon sump. I plan to keep a heavy fishload in it though!
I am looking at upgrading my homemade downdrafts on the 1200 and my 400 gallon prop system!

Jeff it will be for my frag tank. Rightnow, I'm using a euroreef CS5-3, but I replaced the sedra 3500 pump with sicce psk 2500. If I can't wait I might probably just go with MSX160. But then you know, cone is the way to go.

It looks like the mini-cone is going to go for $525 based on the saltwaterconnection website.
Looking forward to seeing the testing results.

Actually the pre-order pricing will be $499 :D after that they will go up to $525.
We will have detailed specs up on the site with footprint, ratings, etc by the end of the week! Once up on the site we will start accepting pre-orders. We expect to have them in the shop by the end of march.

What's the diameter of the base of the cone? Also how tall is the lower pump section (basically how tall is the skimmer not including the pump section)?
