View Full Version : Just how Hardy are Dendros?

I've had 3 nice dendros but they didn't make it past tank transfer. Could a temp swing from 78 to 70 than back up to 78 kill it??

Do they still have skin on the skeleton? A store near me grows dendros back even when doa just from the skin. (Yes, they are hardy.)
On the other hand, I read they are extremely sensitive to stings.

Ive had no issues with my dendros but my new tank is pretty darn stable parameter wise.

Dendro is a generic term used by 2 different corals which one are you talking about? the fleshing soft coral or the lps that looks similar to suncorals

Dendrophyllia sp. = HARDY if fed well
Dendronepthya sp. = NOT Hardy (for 99.9% of us)

If dendrophyllia (LPS), then usual acclimation worked for me (placing bag in the tank for equalizing temperatures and adding small amount of tank in the bag water every few minutes, transfer coral in the tank within 15 min).

I just had my dendros pretty much melt off for unknown reason. Is there anything special I should do if there is a little bit of skin left to try to get it to come back?

I've grown back Tubastrea and Dendrophyllia from a small patch of tissue left on the skin. It can eventually re-sprout polyps from the tissue.

Depends on the species as others have said.
My dendros are extremely hardy. Feed them a few times per week with everything from Mysis, to Cyclops, to New Life Spectrum fish pellets.
mine have always been pretty hardy, but sometimes they just close up for no reason ....kinda weird

I have my Dentro at my office tank and have been feed it fish flakes. it seem to eat these flakes fine and is growing. Anybody here feed Dendro exclusively dry food and have them doing well?

i feed my dendros pellets and they love it and i got them to stay open during the day also which is a mission for both dendros and suncorals... just feed them everyday at the same time and they get used to it and at a certain time theyre clock tells them to open to feed they are amazingly beautiful

They'll for sure accept dry foods... generally its much harder to place dry food in the mouth of them, unless of course it floats right down onto them. Many flake foods are VERY high in Phosphates, so I tend to steer away from the, especially considering how much easier it is to feed a meaty food (for me at least). Regardless it's all about the food, so feed away! :D
In nature plankton is very rich in the water at night, and not during the day. This is the main reason why these corals tend to close during the day. During the first couple weeks if they only open at night I'll feed them, but eventually I never feed them at night, so they're forced to open during the day, which is when I'll feed 'em ;)
