i want to make a 36 x 24 x X sump. Whats the maximum height i can get away with, with 1/8inch glass? i can get the easily thru work. if its not possible to do, what would i need? 1/4"? and how high can i go? i dont want to go more than 16. but thats probably even pushing it. id probably go 14 high. thanks.

1/8" is not worth the worry IMO. I have broke several tanks with 1/8" glass.
Just use 1/4" and sleep well at night.

I made a sump that was 44x14x14x1/4". Solid as a rock.

Use 1/4 glass. you could only go 6 inches high with 1/8 inch if that. I will have a build thread about my sump coming up it is a 24X24X12 sump. Using 1/4 inch glass.

thanks guys. thats what i thought, i can get 1/4 inch but i have to score it on both sides and that doesnt make a smooth edge. how to i go about smoothing the edges?

I use the wet/dry sand paper to smooth out rough edges on glass.
I've even used my belt sander with a fine belt.
