OK.

I'm about to build a refugium/sump onto my main tank.

It will house an external skimmer and then just pump water up to the main tank again. Nothing overly fancy.

Will be making the front of the entire 'sump' a mini display. (Live sand at bottom).

In effect it will be like a mini tank with lots of extra skimming.

Is there any fish I could add to this little 'mini-tank' which would be happy with nothing more than some live sand and live rock.

Approx volume after skimmer and return pump = 14 - 15 gallon.

I'm doing searching around and looking at fish and definately coming up short on ideas.

So.. Summary:
*Fish that is happy to be alone
*Small tank volume
*Moderate water flow
*Sand and rock only (No corals down here. No room for adequate lighting)
*Preferably cute (as in, the non-fishtank-keeping missus looking at him and going "awwww. Isn't he cute.")or personality.

Check out the "Nano Fish" section on liveaquaria for some ideas. They have sevarl fish that only need like 10 gallons or so.

Cool. Good start.. Even if it is just to give me an idea.

Live in Australia so have to compare to what is available at places like Oceanarium and Aquariumsetc (Plus LFS)

Please keep the suggestions coming. :D

If I get to choose from 100 types of fish *BRILLIANT*!

It just means I get to go through a pile and select one that'll make me happy.

If worst comes to worst I'll do the 'least preferred' option. Sure. Putting Macro Algae there would make MUCH more sense, but it's quite frankly boring. And I don't mind doing water changes and testing chemistry that much.

Sharknose or a neon goby. Very small and very cool little fish. Firefish, bangaii cardinal, flasher wrasse, clownfish, shrimp goby. There are lots of choices but i would personally get a cleaner goby because they do have a great personality. Mine used to clean my hand.

Gramma loreto does well alone - stakes out a cave for territory, but will venture out, vibrant yellow and purple coloration, relatively easy care. I'm getting one for my 29 rebuild having loved the fish in my last set up

Neon/sharknose gobies aren't allowed into Australia at the moment. Checked.. :(

That sucks. A royal gramma would be cool but prob get too big in the long run. Ive seen some at the fish store that are getting close to 5 inches and fat. a small damsel would be pretty but gobies have the most personality i think.

royals don't get that big - the good doctors list them at a max of 3". the one I had for years certainly got no bigger than that

Maybe that one was just a freak but i still think they get too big for a 15 gallon tank.

you're right - didn't remember the original post of 14-15 gals. I would agree that 29-30 is probably the low end
